RIC & MCLA SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College split a doubleheader with the Massachusetts College of
Liberal Arts in collegiate baseball action on Saturday afternoon. RIC
scored three runs in its last at-bat to earn a come-from-behind, 6-5,
win over MCLA in game one. The Trailblazers repaid the favor in game
two, scoring two runs in the top of the sixth inning, to earn a 2-1
victory.
|
|
RIC cut
MCLA’s lead to one, 5-4, and loaded the bases with two outs in the
bottom of the seventh inning in game one. Freshman center fielder
Brian Burrows (Smithfield,
RI)
hit a two-strike pitch into right center field for a two-RBI single
that won the game. Junior relief pitcher
Brian Farley (North Providence,
RI),
who came on in the top of the seventh for sophomore starter
Eric Thibault (Somerset, MA),
picked up the win (1-0). MCLA senior reliever
Ricky Roberts (Leverett, MA)
blew the save opportunity for senior starter
Gary Hicks (Buckland, MA)
and was
saddled with the loss (1-1). Burrows went 1-for-3 with three RBI,
while MCLA senior right fielder
Bob Howland (Rockaway, NJ)
went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double.
|
|
RIC continued
the momentum in game two as senior starting pitcher
Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, RI)
breezed through the first five innings. Burrows’ sacrifice fly in the
bottom of the second inning plated freshman left fielder
Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown,
RI)
and gave RIC a 1-0 lead. Briggs ran into trouble in the top of the
sixth as the Trailblazers scored twice, including the go-ahead run on
a RIC error. O’Connors got aboard with a leadoff single in the bottom
of the seventh, but RIC could not get him across with the tying run.
Sophomore pitcher Jim
Pesente (Whitman, MA)
went the
distance for MCLA, hurling a complete game win with three strikeouts
to earn his second victory of the season (2-0). Briggs took the loss
for RIC (1-2).
|
|
O’Connors
upped his hitting streak to 14 games and has now hit safely in each of
his first 14 collegiate games.
|
|
In upcoming
action, RIC will host Coast Guard on Tuesday, Mar. 28 at 3 p.m.
