RIC AND SOUTHERN MAINE SPLIT LEC OPENER
Naylor’s Game-Saving Catch in
Game Two Helps RIC Even LEC Record
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College and the University of Southern Maine opened the 2006
Little East Conference schedule with a doubleheader in Providence on
Saturday afternoon. Southern Maine erupted for 13 runs in the final
five innings to come from behind and win, 14-8, in the opening tilt.
The Anchormen won a close contest, 4-2, in the second game, which was
shortened to seven innings to due darkness. |

|
RIC starting pitcher
Eric
Thibault (Somerset, MA)
breezed through the first three innings, retiring the first eight
batters he faced before things went south in the fifth frame. USM
junior catcher
Jordan
Yanni (Gray, ME)
belted a two-run homer and the Huskies added another run to cut RIC’s
lead to one run. The Anchormen got one back in the fifth before the
wheels came off the wagon in the top of the sixth. Junior shortstop
Nick Vardaro (Norwood, MA)
and starting pitcher/designated hitter
Chris
Burleson (Portland, ME)
hit back-to-back two-RBI doubles to take the lead, 8-6, and Southern
Maine never looked back. Burleson picked up the win (2-0), hurling six
innings with six strikeouts before giving way to junior reliever
Pat
Foley (Norwood, MA)
who
threw the final three frames. Burleson was a key factor at the plate,
going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior third baseman
Joe
Ganley (Keene, NH)
went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior right fielder
Ryan Bourque (Sanford, ME)
clouted a homer. |

Things went well for RIC in game two, despite a 35-minute rain delay
in the bottom of the first. The Anchormen scored twice in the first
frame to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman pitcher
Kyle Jones
(Middleboro, MA)
was erratic all afternoon and it worked to his advantage. Despite
walking five batters and hitting another six, the rookie righty
allowed just three hits, two runs, while striking out five Huskies.
With darkness looming on the horizon and two runners aboard, Jones
gave way to freshman lefty
Donovan
Rabbitt (Wood River Junction, RI)
in the sixth inning. Rabbitt gave up two-out RBI-single to Bourque
and was lifted for sophomore reliever
Eric Fama
(Wappingers Falls, NY).
An error loaded the bases for junior first baseman
Max
Arsenault (Boothbay, ME)
who
belted a shot that RIC junior right fielder
Mike
Naylor (Warwick, RI)
made a highlight reel, diving catch on to end the threat. Fama struck
out the side in the top of the seventh to earn his first save of the
campaign and preserve the win for Jones (2-2) as the game was called
early due to darkness. USM starting pitcher
Peter
Bergeron (Keene, NH)
took the loss (1-2). |

RIC freshman left fielder
Chris
O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI)
went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. He had two hits in game one
to increase his hitting streak to 18 games. He has notched a hit in
each of his first 18 games as a collegiate baseball player. Junior
catcher/designated hitter
Tim
Henault (East Greenwich, RI)
went 3-for-7 with two runs scored and three RBI in the doubleheader.
