RIC & WESTERN CONNECTICUT SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER
Barber & Henault Help Lead Anchormen to Game Two Victory
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College and Western Connecticut split a doubleheader in a
battle of Little East Conference baseball rivals on Saturday
afternoon. The Colonials scored four runs in the top of third inning
in game one and went on to win, 4-2. The Anchormen sent a message back
in game two, erupting for four runs in the bottom of the first as RIC
went on to win, 7-2.
|
|
RIC sophomore starting pitcher
Eric Thibault (Somerset, MA)
was solid for the majority of his eight-inning outing in game one.
Western Connecticut scored four runs, all which came with two out, in
the third inning. Thibault (4-4) kept the Anchormen within striking
distance the rest of the way, striking out three and allowing eight
hits on the day. RIC took an early lead on a sophomore first baseman
Jim Connell’s (North Smithfield, RI)
sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second. The Colonials got an RBI
double from freshman left fielder
Ryan Gorra (Waterford, CT),
as well as RBI singles from sophomore right fielder
Matt Gardiner (Terryville, CT)
and junior designated hitter
James Furino (Branford, CT),
as Western Connecticut jumped into the lead in the third. RIC
threatened in the eighth as sophomore third baseman
Pete Olson (North Providence, RI)
tripled and scored on freshman
Mike McDonnell’s (Peabody, MA)
RBI double. The Anchormen loaded the bases, but Colonials’ freshman
reliever
Ryan Slootmaker (Pequannock, NJ)
got freshman left fielder
Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI)
to ground out and end the threat. Western Connecticut senior starting
pitcher
Zane Honious (Wallingford, CT)
kept RIC hitters off balance all game and benefited from three double
plays to earn his second win (2-3) of the season. Slootmaker earned
his third save.

|
RIC junior starting pitcher
Caleb Barber (Mystic, CT)
came back with a strong outing in game two, allowing two runs on nine
hits, to go along with two strikeouts, over seven innings to earn his
fourth win (4-2) of the season. The only damage the Colonials did was
on solo home runs by Furino and Gardiner in the second and third
innings, respectively. Anchorman sophomore reliever
Eric Fama (Wappingers Falls, NY)
pitched two innings and struck out the side in the top of the ninth to
seal the win. Junior catcher
Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI)
went
3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI. Olson, who went 2-for-3 in
the game, hit a two-RBI single in the bottom of the first to cap the
four-run effort. Western Connecticut senior pitcher
Brian Krost (Stamford, CT)
took
the loss (2-2), allowing six runs, of which only two were earned, on
nine hits over five and two-thirds innings of work.
