Weslander’s Basket With Nine Seconds Left Wins it for Blue |
|
Providence, RI—Senior guard Laura Weslander (Mendota
Heights, MN) hit a layup off the backboard as the shot clock
expired with 9.8 seconds left in the game to propel Wellesley College
past Rhode Island College, 48-46, on Thursday night. |
|
|
|
Rhode
Island College, which led by as many as 11 points, was on top for the
entire game until the final minutes. Weslander hit a wide open
three-pointer from the corner to pull the Blue within two, 46-44, at
2:05. Junior forward Sefi Adasi (Rockville,
MD)
nailed a jump shot from the baseline to tie the game, 46-46, with 1:07
remaining. |

RIC senior
guard Jamie Angell (Cranston,
RI)
was fouled on the ensuing possession and missed both free throw
attempts with 39.8 seconds left. The Blue got the rebound and as shot
clock dwindled, Weslander was forced to drive to the basket and made
the clutch layup as the shot clock went to zero. |

The
Anchorwomen drove to halfcourt and called timeout with 4.1 seconds
left. Angell missed a long-range three at the buzzer, which gave the
Blue the impromptu victory. |

Adasi had
18 points and 16 rebounds to lead Wellesley. Senior forward Kristin
Doeberl (West
Redding, CT)
had 13 points, five boards and two steals. The Blue were just 1-for-14
from three-point range in the game prior to Weslander’s trey. |
