TOURNEY

Warriors avenge 27-point regular-season loss
with 68-49 victory in opening round |

WILLIMANTIC, Conn.—Freshman guard Nicky
Morey (COLUMBIA) had 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists
to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University women’s basketball
team to a 69-48 victory over Rhode Island College Tuesday night at
Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium in the opening round of the Little East
Conference Tournament. |

In
posting its fifth 20-win season in the last six years, third-seeded
Eastern (20-6) advances to the tournament semifinals Friday night
against second-seeded Western Connecticut State University. The
Colonials edged seventh-seeded Massachusetts Boston, 64-60. Top-seeded
University of Southern Maine will host the semifinals and final this
weekend. The Huskies face fourth-seeded Keene State College at 8
p.m.Friday after Eastern plays Western at 6 p.m. Southern Maine
routed Massachusetts Dartmouth,92-29,and Keene downed fifth-seeded
Plymouth State University, 75-64. The tournament final is scheduled
for Saturday at 4 p.m. |

After
losing by a score of 84-57 to visiting Rhode Island (12-14) 17 days
ago, the Warriors raced to a 32-17 halftime lead and were never
threatened. After 61.3 per cent in the first half in that earlier
game, Rhode Island shot just 22.7 per cent over the first 20 minutes
this time and trailed by 15, 32-17,at halftime. |

Junior
forward Sandy Mosley (Goshen, CT) had a game-high 20
points to lead Eastern. Senior center Katie Kline (North
Brookfield, MA) had ten points on5-for-6 shooting from the floor.
Morey was just shy of a triple-double, finishing two points shy of her
season-high in points, one shy of her high rebounding mark and
equaling her season-high assist high. |

Sophomore forward Colleen Feeney (Providence, RI) led Rhode
Island with 14 points and a game-high ten rebounds while junior
forward Kari Geisler (Deerfield, NH) had 13 points and nine
rebounds. Senior guard Jamie Angell (Cranston, RI), who had a
career-high 31 points to spark her team’s regular-season win, was
limited to eight points. In the first half, she was scoreless from the
floor, sinking two free throws. The Anchorwomen turned the ball over
23 times after committing only 14 in the regular-season game. |
