O’CONNORS & NAYLOR HELP RIC DOWN

Briggs Earns Second Win as RIC Goes Over .500

Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College defeated Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, 11-5,
in collegiate baseball action on Monday afternoon. The Anchormen
snapped a 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the third inning, capped by
freshman designated hitter Jared Rossi’s (Johnston, RI) first
collegiate hit: a three-RBI double to center field. Rhode Island
College outscored the Trailblazers, 8-2, from the bottom of the third
on to go over the .500 mark for the first time on the season with a
5-4 record. MCLA falls to 2-9. |

The Anchormen
jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, junior
third baseman Pete Olson (North Providence, RI) and senior
catcher Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) belted back-to-back
singles. Sophomore left fielder Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown,
RI) then tagged MCLA junior pitcher Jim Pesente (Whitman, MA)
for a three-run homer (1), despite cracking his bat on the drive. |

The Trailblazers
evened the game up, 3-3, in the top of the third. Sophomore designated
hitter Matt Burke (Middleboro, MA) and sophomore center fielder
Pat Negrini (West Stockbridge, MA) were aboard with singles
with two down. Junior third baseman Anthony Bruno (Queens, NY)
and sophomore shortstop Steve Sullivan (Dalton, MA) notched
back-to-back RBI singles, with Bruno eventually scoring on a Rhode
Island College senior starting pitcher Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, RI)
wild pitch. |

RIC loaded the
bases with one out in the home half of the third and Pesente walked
sophomore second baseman Jeff Costa (Pawtucket, RI) to give the
Anchormen back the lead prior to Rossi’s double. |
|
|
|
Rhode Island
College senior right fielder Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI) banged a
pair of RBI doubles in the fourth an six innings, respectively, to
finish the game, going 3-for-4 with one run scored and two RBI.
O’Connors went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Briggs
(2-0) picked up his second win of the season, hurling five innings,
allowing four runs, three of which were earned, on five hits to go
along with five strikeouts. He gave way to junior pitcher Evan
Grogan (East Lyme, CT) in the sixth. Grogan notched six strikeouts
to close out the game. |

Pesente (1-2)
took the loss, allowing nine runs, eight of which were earned, on 11
hits to go along with four strikeouts. |

In upcoming
action, the Anchormen will play at Coast Guard on Tuesday, Mar. 27 at
3 p.m. |
