NICOLE RILEY SETS RIC ALL-TIME
WINS RECORD
Perrin Knocks in Decisive Runs as Anchorwomen
Take Two From Wheaton
|
|
Providence,
RI—Rhode
Island College senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI)
became the Anchorwomen’s all-time leader in career wins as RIC swept a
doubleheader from Wheaton in collegiate softball action. |
|
|
|
Riley entered
this afternoon’s action tied with Kim Warrington ’04 with 53
career victories. Rhode Island College downed the Lyons, 3-1, in game
one, and then again, 2-1, in game two, with Riley picking up both
wins. She allowed two unearned runs on seven hits in 14 innings of
work. She is currently 7-0 on the season with a microscopic 0.14 ERA.
In 49.2 innings of work, Riley has allowed just four runs, only one of
which is earned, to go along with 43 strikeouts and just six walks.
She is currently riding a 30-game winning streak, having not lost
since Mar. 17 of 2006. Riley is 55-15 in her career. |

The
Anchorwomen jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one, as junior first
baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) led off with a double
and scored on a bunt by senior catcher Kristyn Alexander (East
Wareham, MA). The Lyons responded in the top of the second with
the equalizer. Senior first baseman Jessica DePolito (Taunton, MA)
belted a one-out double and scored on a throwing error later in the
frame. RIC scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the third
on a RBI-single by freshman right fielder Michelle Perrin (Saugus,
MA). That would be all Riley would need as she allowed just two
baserunners the remainder of the contest. The Anchorwomen added an
insurance run in the sixth as freshman pinch-hitter Cassie Taverna
(Bedford, MA) was credited with an RBI fielder’s choice in her
first collegiate at-bat. Wheaton junior starting pitcher Jodi
Moynagh (Worcester, MA) took the loss (2-3), allowing six hits,
three runs, two of which were earned, over six innings. |
|
|
|
Game two was a
tight affair as both teams scored in the third inning. Wheaton jumped
out to a 1-0 lead on senior shortstop Nicole Lachance’s (Rochester,
NH) RBI triple. The Anchorwomen answered right back in the home
half of the inning, as Alexander plated freshman shortstop Kelsey
Souza (Braintree, MA) with an RBI single. RIC threatened in both
the fifth and six innings, starting each frame with back-to-back
singles, only to strand the runners. The Anchorwomen broke through in
the bottom of the seventh as Lotti led off with a double to left field
and scored on Perrin’s game-winning up-the-middle single. Wheaton
freshman starting pitcher Andrea Bagley (Foxboro, MA) was the
hard luck loser (3-2), allowing two runs, one of which was earned, and
nine hits over six-plus innings. |

In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will play a doubleheader at Salem State
on Thursday, Mar. 29 at 4 p.m. |
