DOYON & BARBER LEAD RIC PAST SALEM
STATE
Anchormen Win Fifth Straight
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College senior pitcher Caleb Barber (Mystic, CT) earned
his second win (2-0) of the season and sophomore center fielder B.J.
Doyon (Douglas, MA) went 2-for-3 with three RBI in the
Anchormen’s, 6-2, win over Salem State in collegiate baseball action
on Thursday afternoon. RIC has won its last five games and six of its
last seven. |
Barber was
making his first start since the club returned from Florida two weeks
ago. He surrendered one run in the first inning, before shutting the
door on the Vikings over the next five innings. Salem State junior
catcher Marc Crovo (Melrose, MA) led off the game with a walk,
stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior first
baseman Ken Luongo (Wilmington, MA) plated Crovo with a
two-out, RBI single. |
Rhode Island
College scored three runs in the third to take the lead for good.
Salem State senior starting pitcher Erik Willett (Salisbury, MA)
retired the first two batters of the frame before issuing walks to
sophomore left fielder Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI)
and senior right fielder Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI). Junior
shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) plated O’Connors with an
RBI single and Doyon followed with a bases-clearing two-RBI double to
put RIC on top, 3-1. |
The Anchormen
scored two more in the fifth as O’Connors and Naylor picked up
back-to-back singles to start the inning. Junior first baseman Jim
Connell (Smithfield, RI) belted a two-RBI single to give RIC a 5-1
advantage. |
Barber allowed
just one additional hit, while keeping the Vikings off the scoreboard,
before giving way to freshman reliever Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI)
in the seventh. SSC sophomore left fielder Greg Richards (Saugus,
MA) led off the eighth with a walk and scored on junior right
fielder Anthony Palmieri’s (Peabody, MA) RBI double. |
Doyon added an
RBI single in the eighth and junior reliever Evan Grogan (East Lyme,
CT) pitched a scoreless ninth. |
O’Connors went
1-for-1 with three runs scored and three walks. Connell and Cardoso
each went 2-for-4 with two and one RBI, respectively. Willett (1-2)
took the loss, allowing five runs, while walking five in five innings
of work. Barber allowed just two hits in six innings on the mound. |
In upcoming
action, RIC will open the Little East Conference schedule with a
doubleheader against Keene State at home on Saturday, Mar. 31
beginning at noon. |
