ALEXANDER’S SIX RBI HELPS RIC
SWEEP SOUTHERN MAINE
Riley Stays Unbeaten With Game One Shutout
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College won its seventh consecutive game and opened the Little
East Conference schedule with two victories over Southern Maine in
collegiate softball action at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex. The
Anchorwomen won, 8-0, in six innings in the opener, then won game two,
10-2, to improve to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Huskies
fall to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in the LEC. |

|
Rhode Island
College senior starting pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI)
was masterful in game one, hurling a five-inning shutout, her fifth of
the season, to improve to 9-0 on the season. She allowed just three
hits, while striking out 10. Riley has won 32 consecutive games dating
back to last spring and upped her school-record career victories total
to 57 games. |

|
RIC junior first
baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) put the Anchorwomen on
top early, tripling to lead off the game. Freshman right fielder
Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA) plated Lotti the following at-bat to
make the score 1-0. The Huskies put the first two runners on in both
the second and third innings, but Riley stranded them, as she retired
the final 14 batters she faced. |

The Anchorwomen
broke the game open in the fifth inning as sophomore designated player
Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, MA) led off with a single, and with
two-out, USM junior starting pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, ME)
hit Perrin. Senior catcher Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, MA)
belted a three-run homer (1), her first of the year, to clear the
bases and give RIC a 4-0 advantage. RIC ended the game early, erupting
for four additional runs in the home half of the sixth, capped by an
Alexander RBI-single and a throwing error. Grondin took the loss
(3-5). |

Rhode Island

Danielle Potvin (Sabattus, ME) in the first inning of game two,
tagging the rookie for four runs on five hits. Lotti and Perrin
reached on a walk and single, respectively, and Alexander promptly
doubled them home. Junior third baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg,
MA) doubled in Alexander and then scored on a Burgess RBI-single.
Potvin was chased after just a third of an inning and gave way to
sophomore Sarah Coonradt (Richmond, ME), who didn’t fare much
better. After getting out of the first, Coonradt was tagged for four
runs on four hits in the second inning, capped by a two-RBI Burgess
single. The Anchorwomen led 11-2 entering the bottom of the fifth,
needing just one run to force the victory. Junior shortstop Jeanne
Rosa (Milford, CT) singled, stole second and was plated on Lotti’s
RBI triple. Riley threw two scoreless innings before giving way to
freshman pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY). Deveines picked
