Gavin’s Season-High Eight Goals Aren’t Enough
As Anchorwomen Remain Winless

Regina University outscored Rhode Island College, 11-4, in the second
half to rally past a four-goal halftime deficit as the Seahawks earned
their first win of the season in a 14-11 victory at Rhode Island
College on Tuesday afternoon. |

Rhode Island
College senior center Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth,
RI)
was an offensive force, scoring seven of the Anchorwomen’s 11 goals.
Gavin added 14 ground balls and seven draw controls. Freshman
midfielder Meridith Darby (Middletown,
RI),
junior midfielder Marissa Kielbasinski (Windsor,
CT),
freshman attack Emily Conte (North
Providence,
RI)
and junior midfielder Kerry McDevitt (Jamestown, RI)
rounded out RIC’s offensive output. Freshman goalkeeper Katie
Kielbasinski (Windsor,
CT)
made nine saves as her record dips to 0-3 on the season. |

Gavin netted
five of RIC’s seven first-half goals as the Anchorwomen jumped out to a
7-4 advantage. The Seahawks stormed back in the second half, scoring
six goals in the first ten minutes of the second stanza. Sophomore
attack Brittany Marino (Mt.
Sinai, NY)
was set up by freshman midfielder Sarah Baker
(Summit,
NJ)
at 40:15 to forge an 8-8 tie. Marino repaid the assist 17 seconds
later as Baker gave SRU a lead it would never relinquish. Marino was
the offensive hero on the day, logging six goals and three assists for
nine points, including four second half tallies. Baker chipped in with
three goals and three assists for six points. Freshman goalkeeper
Samantha Zito (Stony
Brook, NY)
earned her first collegiate win between the pipes, making 19 saves and
logging a team-high 12 ground balls. Junior attack
Whitney Bushee’s (Duxbury,
MA) at 47:20 proved to be the eventual
game-winner. |
