CARDOSO POWERS RIC PAST CORSAIRS,
13-3
Anchormen Pound Out Nine Runs in Late Inning Outburst
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College sophomore shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA)
went 4-for-5 with five RBI, two runs scored, two home runs (4) and a
double in a 13-3 win over Little East Conference rival UMass Dartmouth
on Thursday afternoon. Junior starting pitcher Eric Thibault
(Somerset, MA) won his second game (2-2) of the year, allowing
three runs on six hit, to go along with seven strikeouts in a
six-inning effort. |
UMass Dartmouth
registered its lone lead of the game in the top of the first inning as
freshman third baseman Reid Burns (Westport, CT) walked and
then scored on junior first baseman Dylan Zygmont’s (Swansea, MA),
two-out, RBI double. |
The Anchormen took
the lead for good in the bottom half of the frame as the first three
batters all singled, capped by sophomore left fielder Chris
O’Connors’ (North Kingstown, RI) RBI single to left field. Cardoso
followed with a one-out, RBI double to give RIC a 2-1 advantage. |
Rhode Island
College put two more runs on the board in the third as Cardoso and
junior first baseman Jim Connell (North Smithfield, RI) (1)
each belted solo homers. The Corsairs used a two-out rally in the top
of the fourth to whittle the deficit to one run on freshman shortstop
Jeff Macchi’s (Franklin, MA) RBI double and was followed suit
by a freshman right fielder Kevin Narey (Lynn, MA) RBI single. |
Thibault go out of
a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh as he got junior catcher
Billy Reiss (Clinton, CT) to ground out to third and end the
threat. The Anchormen erupted for nine runs in the seventh and eighth
innings to put the game out of reach. |
Senior catcher
Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) led off the seventh with a solo
homer (1) and the next five Anchormen all reached and scored as part
of a six-run explosion. Senior right fielder Mike Naylor’s
(Warwick, RI) two-RBI double chased UMD freshman starting pitcher
Adam Gustafson (Dighton, MA), who gave way to senior reliever
Pat Costa (New Bedford, MA). Cardoso greeted him with a
monstrous blast over left center field fence. Sophomore center fielder
B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA) then doubled and was plated on a
Connell RBI single. |
RIC freshman
reliever Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI) pitched a scoreless eighth.
The Anchormen tacked on three additional runs in the home half of the
eighth and junior reliever Evan Grogan (East Lyme, CT) pitched
a scoreless ninth as the Anchormen won for the sixth time over the
past seven games. |
Rhode Island
College ups its record to 9-5 overall and 2-1 in the Little East
Conference. Gustafson (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season as
UMD sees its record fall to 4-11 overall and 1-2 in league action. |
In upcoming
action, RIC will host UMass Boston for a Little East Conference
doubleheader on Saturday, April 7 beginning at noon. |
