Rhode Island College Raises
Conference Win Streak to Four
|
|
Providence, RI—The Rhode Island College
baseball team sailed past UMass Boston in collegiate baseball this
afternoon at Anchorman Field, sweeping the twinbill, 6-4, and 9-4.
Sophomore shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) was red hot
from the dish, registering six hits (6-for-9) with four runs scored
and two RBI’s to pace the Anchormen’s well-balanced attack. |

In the
opener, Rhode Island College (11-5, 4-1 LEC) scored three runs in the
bottom of the seventh inning to rally past UMass Boston (9-7, 1-3),
6-4. Freshman pitcher Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI) surrendered one
hit and struck out two to earn the victory in relief, while junior
Evan Grogan (East Lyme, CT) closed the door with a scoreless ninth
to collect his first collegiate save. The Anchormen received a strong
starting pitching effort from senior Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, RI).
Briggs threw 6.1 innings, allowing just four hits and two earned runs,
while fanning three. |
|
|
|
Freshman designated hitter Tim Schabowski (Pascoag, RI) gave
the hosts the early advantage in the second inning with two-out, RBI
double down the left field line. The Anchormen added two more runs in
the fourth, keyed by junior first basemen Jim Connell’s
(Smithfield, RI) RBI single. |
|

|
The
Beacons were finally able to solve Briggs in the top of the fifth
inning, pushing a pair of runs across to whittle the deficit to 3-2.
The visitors capitalized on two walks and an error to crack the
scoring column. UMass Boston added a run in each of the next two
innings to take its only lead of the contest, 4-3, heading into the
bottom of the seventh. |

Rhode
Island College came back with three runs on four hits. Senior catcher
Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) opened the stanza with a
double to right field. Henault advanced to third and scored on
sophomore outfielder Chris O’Connors’ (North Kingstown, RI)
sacrifice fly. Cardoso and sophomore center fielder B.J. Doyon
(Douglas, MA) registered back-to-back RBI singles to chase UMass
Boston starting pitch Nick Conway (Methuen, MA). Conway gave up
nine hits and six runs, five of which were earned and walked three,
while posting two strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Sophomore Anthony
Lauretto (Pembroke, MA) came on in relief to end the threat.
