NICOLE RILEY BREAKS NCAA DIV. III RECORD WITH TWO WINS
Anchorwomen Improve to 18-2 and Increase Win Streak to 14
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI)
established a new NCAA Div. III softball record for
consecutive wins, earning both victories, in the Anchorwomen’s sweep
of intra-state rival Roger Williams on Monday afternoon. |
Riley entered the first contest with a
35-game winning streak, having tied Janet Nagle’s (St. Thomas
College, MN) previous mark in a 3-1 win over Curry College on Apr. 7.
She earned her seventh shutout of the season with a one-hit,
six-strikeout effort as RIC downed the Hawks, 11-0, in five innings. |
The Anchorwomen jumped out to a 3-0 lead
in the bottom of the first as junior first baseman Christie Lotti
(Waterford, CT) singled and was sacrificed over to second by
freshman right fielder Michelle Perrin (Saugus, MA).
Senior catcher Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, MA) plated
Lotti with an RBI single. Later in the frame, sophomore second baseman
Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, MA) and freshman center fielder
Jackie Dube (Barrington, NH) notched back-to-back RBI singles up
the middle. |
RIC tacked on runs in both the second
and third innings before erupting for six runs in the fourth off of
Roger Williams senior starting pitcher Laura McAbee (Fairfield, OH).
McAbee was let down by her defense, which made three errors in the
frame. She took the loss (7-2), allowing 10 runs, six of which were
earned, on 13 hits in 3.2 innings of work. Freshman pitcher Cathy
Sheerin (Wilmington, MA) came on in relief, but couldn’t stem the
tide, allowing one unearned run in a third of an inning. |
Game two was a wild affair as the Hawks
scored four runs on seven hits against the tandem of RIC freshmen
pitchers Jamie Sacco (Bellingham, MA) and Jenna Deveines
(Lowville, NY) through the first 2.2 innings. Rhode Island College
Head Coach Maria Morin called upon Riley to bail the
Anchorwomen out of a two-out, two-on threat in the third, as she got
Roger Williams freshman right fielder Kerry Burke (Old Saybrook,
CT) to ground out to third. |
The Anchorwomen came back with six runs
in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on two Hawks’ miscues.
Freshman shortstop Kelsey Souza (Braintree, MA) and Perrin each
registered two-RBI singles. Roger Williams junior starting pitcher
Kristin Foss (Concord, NH) took the loss (5-3), surrendering eight
runs, three of which were earned, on eight hits in three innings of
work. |
Alexander went 4-for-6 with two RBI and
one run scored, pulling her within one RBI of tying RIC all-time
leader Michele Fanelli’s ’03 mark of 78. Perrin went 3-for-4
with two RBI and two runs scored, while Lotti went 3-for-7 with four
runs scored and three steals. |
The Anchorwomen have won their last 14
games and 18 of their last 19. Riley has not lost since falling to
Plattsburgh State, 7-0, on Mar. 17, 2006. She began her current win
streak, ironically against Roger Williams on Mar. 23, 2006, in a 9-2
win. She is RIC’s all-time leader in victories with a 62-15 record and
is currently 14-0 on the season. |
In upcoming action, RIC will host Lasell
for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at the Dayna A.
Bazar Softball Complex. |
