RIC SEES FOUR-GAME WIN STREAK END
IN LOSS TO CORSAIRS
Five-Run Seventh Spells Doom for Anchormen
North
Dartmouth, MA—The
Rhode Island College baseball team saw its modest four-game win streak
come to an end in a 6-3 loss to Little East Conference rival UMass
Dartmouth on Wednesday afternoon. The two teams split the regular
season meetings, with the Anchormen taking a 13-3 decision at home
last Thursday. RIC is currently 11-6 overall and 4-2 in the LEC, while
the Corsairs improve to 5-13 overall and 2-4 in league play. |
Freshman
right-hander Adam Gustafson (Dighton, MA) pitched his second
complete game victory of the season as the Corsairs rallied for five
runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come from behind and earn
the win. |
Gustafson allowed 10 hits, walked one batter and struck out four in
winning his second game in three starts against Little East
competition. The Corsairs scored five runs in the seventh against RIC
junior right-hander Eric Thibault (Somerset, MA), who had
defeated them six days ago in Providence. |
Senior
left fielder Rob LoMuscio (West Roxbury, MA) led off the
decisive seventh with a single and was erased at second by a fielder’s
choice. Sophomore third baseman Dave McGuire (Plainville, MA),
who forced LoMuscio at second, advanced to third on a hit by sophomore
center fielder Sean Smolinsky (Hull, MA). Consecutive errors by
the Anchormen for the first run of the inning, and back-to-back
two-run doubles by junior first baseman Dylan Zygmont (Swansea, MA)
and junior catcher Billy Reiss (Clinton, CT) made it 6-3.
Freshman designated hitter Reid Burns (Westport, MA) drove in
UMass Dartmouth’s first run with a fifth-inning single. |
RIC
broke on top with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning,
scoring on senior catcher Tim Henault’s (East Greenwich, RI)
sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single by sophomore center fielder
B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA). Junior designated hitter Pete Olson’s
(North Providence, RI) sacrifice fly in the sixth made it 3-1 |
Gustafson improved to 3-1 with the victory. Thibault pitched seven
innings, was charged with only a single earned run, and dropped to 2-3
with the defeat. |

In
upcoming action, RIC will host Southern Maine on Saturday, Apr. 14 at
