BIG INNINGS LEAD TO RIC’S DEMISE
VS. SOUTHERN MAINE
Anchormen Drop to .500 in Little East Action
|
|
Providence, RI—Southern
Maine swept a doubleheader from Rhode Island College in Little East
Conference baseball action at Anchorman Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies improve to 13-6 overall and 4-2 in the LEC, while the
Anchormen, who dropped their third consecutive conference tilt, fall
to 11-8 overall and 4-4 in the league. |
|
|
|
The Huskies chased Rhode Island College senior starting
pitcher Wade Briggs (Woonsocket, RI) after just two-thirds of
an inning in the first frame, pounding out seven runs on seven hits.
Senior catcher Max Arsenault (Boothbay, ME) belted a one-out,
three-run homer (2) to put the visitors up and freshman first baseman
Collin Henry (Penobscot, ME) followed with a solo shot (3).
Southern Maine wasn’t done as sophomore right fielder Andrew Stacy
(Denmark, ME) notched an RBI single and senior shortstop Nick
Vardaro (Norwood, MA) plated two more with a knock, which sent
Briggs to an early exit. Freshman pitcher Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI)
came on to get RIC out of the inning. |
|
|
|
The Anchormen attempted a comeback, scoring two runs in
the third inning, capped by a sophomore left fielder Chris
O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI) RBI double and a sophomore
shortstop Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) RBI triple. |
|
|
|
Vatter kept the Huskies at bay, pitching four scoreless
innings until the sixth frame when two errors and a wild pitch saw USM
put two more runs on the board. Southern Maine sophomore pitcher
Chris Burleson (Portland, ME) went the distance to pick up his
second win (2-1) of the season, allowing two runs on seven hits, while
striking out eight, in a complete game win. Briggs took the loss (2-2)
for RIC. Vardaro went 3-for-5 with two RBI in the win.
|
|
|
|
The
nightcap was a pitcher’s duel through the first four innings as Henry
and RIC freshman pitcher Bobby Germane (Barrington, RI) did not
allow a run. The Anchormen shot themselves in the foot in the bottom
of the fifth as they committed three errors as the Huskies scored
seven unearned runs on just four hits off of the rookie lefty.
|
|
|
|
USM added
one run in the in the seventh and plated five in the eighth off of
junior reliever Evan Grogan (East Lyme, CT). Freshman third
baseman Josh Mackey (Danvers, MA) belted a solo shot (3) in the
seventh and added an RBI double in the eighth. Freshman first baseman
Mark Schmidt (Gorham, ME) chipped in with an RBI double in the
late-game outburst. Sophomore designated hitter Josh Skillin
(Portland, ME) went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored in the
game. |
|
|
|
Henry
went eight innings, allowing just one run, on an O’Connors RBI single,
to pick up his second win (2-3) of the year. He held the Anchormen to
nine hits and struck out three. Germane (2-2) was the hard luck loser,
allowing seven unearned runs to go along with five strikeouts in five
innings of work. |
