ALEXANDER TIES RIC CAREER RBI MARK
IN SWEEP OF UMASS BOSTON
Riley Continues NCAA Record Streak
|
|
Boston,
MA—Rhode
Island College improved to 22-2 overall and 4-0 in the Little East
Conference in a doubleheader sweep at UMass Boston on Saturday
afternoon. The Anchorwomen have not lost since returning from their
spring trip to Florida and upped their current win streak to 17 games.
The Beacons fall to 4-10 overall and remain winless with an 0-6
conference mark. |

Rhode
Island College senior catcher Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, MA)
tied Michele Fanelli’s ‘03 all-time school record for career
RBI (78) with a bases loaded, RBI walk in the top of the fifth inning
of game one. Senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI)
upped her NCAA Div. III softball record for consecutive wins to 40,
picking up both victories. Riley improved her record to 17-0 on the
season, firing a three-hit shutout in game one and came off the bench
to earn a win in relief in game two. |

The
Anchorwomen hammered the Beacons, 19-0, in the first game. Riley
struck out five Beacons in three innings of work. Seven different
Anchorwomen registered at least one hit, with four players notching
multiple knocks. Sophomore second baseman Justine Burgess
(Uxbridge, MA) paced the attack by going 3-for-4 with four RBI and
two runs scored. Junior third baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA)
went 1-for-2 with three RBI and three runs scored. Freshman designated
player Mandy Shurgot (Woonsocket, RI) chipped in with a
2-for-3, two-RBI, two-runs scored performance. |

The
nightcap was a tight affair as Rhode Island College went up, 4-0, with
one run in the first and three more in the second. UMass Boston
responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the third and
threatened to end Riley’s streak in the seventh. The Beacons led off
the inning with four straight hits to tie the game, 5-5, but Riley got
out of a one-out, bases loaded jam, by getting two pop outs to force
an extra session. |

|
Rhode
Island College scored five runs on three hits in the top of the
eighth, paced by freshman first baseman Cassie Taverna’s (Bedford,
MA) two-RBI double. Burgess chipped in with an RBI single and
freshman center fielder Jackie Dube (Barrington, NH) belted a
two-RBI double in the late game heroics. Burgess went 3-for-4 with two
RBI and a run scored, while Dube went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run
scored to lead RIC offensively. |
