HENAULT POWERS RIC PAST CURRY,
13-10
Anchormen Avoid Colonels’ 10-Run Outburst in the Fifth
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College senior catcher Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI)
blasted a fifth inning grand-slam over the right field fence to lift
the Anchormen to a 13-10 victory over visiting Curry College this
afternoon in non-conference collegiate baseball at Anchorman Field.
Henault paced the attack with a 3-for-5 showing at the plate with
four RBIs and three runs scored as the hosts raised their overall
record to 12-8. The game was called after seven innings due to
darkness. |
|
|
|
Despite the raw
and rainy conditions, the Rhode Island College hitters were red-hot
as seven of the starting nine recorded at least one hit with four
student-athletes registering multiple knocks. Senior right fielder
Mike Naylor (Warwick, RI) turned in a 3-for-4 performance
from the dish with three RBI’s, while sophomore shortstop Josh
Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) and junior designated hitter Peter
Olson (North Providence, RI) each added multiple hits. Cardoso
was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Olson went 2-for-5 with an
RBI. |
|
|
|
Rhode Island
College cracked the scoring column early and often as the Anchormen
plated runs in three of the first four innings to build a 7-0
advantage entering the fifth inning. The hosts rudely greeted Curry
(14-6) sophomore relief pitcher Jim Simon (Deerfield Beach, FL)
with a four-hit, five-run bottom of the third. Sophomore second
baseman Garrett Grenier (North Smithfield, RI) capped the
surge with a two-out, two-RBI single through the right side of the
infield. |
|
|
|
The Colonels
were unable to solve the Rhode Island College pitching staff through
the first four frames as the Anchormen held the visitors hitless.
Freshman starting pitcher Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI) threw
three strong innings, while junior Eric Thibault (Somerset, MA)
hurled a perfect fourth. |
|
|
|
The visitors
found their stroke in the fifth inning as Curry erupted for 10 runs
on 10 hits to claim its first lead of the contest, 10-7. Freshman
first baseman Rick Vail (Lynnfield, MA) and junior catcher
Bill Galvin (Deerfield Beach, FL) each went 2-for-2 in the
stanza as the Colonels sent 15 hitters to the plate.
|
|
|
|
The Colonels
advantage was short lived as Rhode Island College rallied for four
runs in the bottom of the inning. The Anchormen were able to
capitalize on an error and a pair of walks by junior pitcher Matt
Wile (Newburyport, MA) to load the bases. After a runner was
eliminated at the plate on a fielder’s choice, Henault gave the home
crowd fans a reason to cheer with his first collegiate grand slam to
put the hosts back on top, 11-10. Wile suffered his first loss of
the campaign, giving up five runs on three hits in two innings of
work. |
|
|
|
The Anchormen
staff regained their form in the following two innings, allowing
just one hit. Freshman Bobby Germane (Barrington, RI)
scattered a leadoff single in the sixth, but buckled down to retire
the next three batters in order. Germane gave up three runs on three
hits in an inning and a third to earn the victory (3-2), while
senior Brian Farley (North Providence, RI) hurled a 1-2-3
seventh inning to register his first save of the season.
