Anchorwomen Earn 1st Conference Victory
Gavin Paces Attack With 8 Points
Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College women's lacrosse team earned its first Little
East Conference victory of the campaign as the Anchorwomen edged
Western Connecticut State University, 12-10, this afternoon at the
Rhode Island College Lacrosse Complex. Senior attacker Caitlin
Gavin (Portsmouth, RI) led the charge with seven goals and an
assist as the hosts raise their overall record to 3-6 and 1-2 in the
conference circuit. |
Rhode Island College registered its second-ever Little
East Conference victory in the program's seven-year history.
Prior to today's win, the Anchorwomen outlasted Southern
Maine, 5-4, in overtime on April 18, 2002. |
Junior midfielder Kerry McDevitt (Jamestown,
RI) recorded four points, including a hat trick, while
freshman classmates Emily Conte (North Providence, RI) and
Christina Tavana (Middletown, CT) each found the back of the
net. |
Despite a sluggish start and facing a five-goal
deficit, Rhode Island College found its offensive rhythm in the final
10 minutes of the first frame. McDevitt got the Anchorwomen on track
with her first of three tallies on the afternoon, while Gavin
converted on a pair of free-position attempts to cut the deficit to
two. Western Connecticut (1-11, 0-4) briefly disrupted the Rhode
Island College's momentum
with a score, but Gavin responded with her third goal of the half
with just 50 seconds remaining to send the Anchorwomen into the
intermission trailing, 7-5. |
Rhode Island College scored six of the first seven goals of
the second stanza to take the advantage for good. Gavin converted off a feed from junior defender Erin
Duffy (North Dighton, MA) to start the surge, while McDevitt
forged an eight-all tie with two straight scores. Gavin sandwiched a
pair of markers between Tavana's seventh goal of the campaign to
give the the Anchorwomen a three-goal advantage, 11-8.

Western Connecticut would not go down without a
fight, as the visitors answered with consecutive scores to cut the
deficit to one with six minutes and 24 seconds remaining in
regulation. Gavin dashed all hopes of a Colonials' comeback as she
sealed Rhode Island College's first conference victory with her
team-leading 37th marker of the season with just over two minutes
left on the clock. |
Western Connecticut was led by the balanced attack of
junior midfielder Caitlin Everin (Glastonbury, CT), who
netted a pair of goals and handed out two assists for four points.
Senior attacker Taylor Moore (Hamden, CT) and freshman
attacker Kara Kruczkiewicz (Brookfield, CT) each recorded
three points for the visitors. |
Between
the pipes, Rhode Island College freshman Katie Kielbasinski
(Windsor, CT) made 14 saves, including six in the second stanza,
to earn her second straight victory and third on the campaign, while
Western Connecticut freshman Angela Vargas (Stonington, CT)
made 10 stops. |
The Anchorwomen held a 45-40 edge in ground balls,
while the Colonials outshot their hosts, 35-33, and controlled two
more draws (13-11). |
Rhode
Island College returns to action at 6 p.m. on April 22, when the
