ANCHORWOMEN SWEEP PANTHERS
INCREASE WINNING STREAK TO 21 GAMES
Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College softball team swept a Little East Conference
doubleheader from visiting Plymouth State University this afternoon
at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex. Senior right-hander
Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) raised her NCAA Division III
softball record for consecutive wins to 42 with a 10-0 decision in
game one, while earning her second save of the season as the
Anchorwomen took the nightcap, 4-1. |
Riley was nothing
short of spectacular in the first game, striking out nine of the 14
batters she faced, while surrendering just one hit over four strong
innings. She retired the side in order twice, while only allowing a
lone Plymouth State baserunner to reach second once. Riley recorded
her 19th victory (19-0) of the season and lowered her earned run
average to a miniscule 0.42. |
Senior catcher
Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, MA) led the Rhode Island
College attack with a 3-for-3 showing from the plate with an RBI and
a run scored. Junior third baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA)
was also hot from the dish with a 2-for-3 performance and a
team-high three RBI’s. |
Rhode Island College
cracked the scoring column in the bottom of the second inning, when
freshman second baseman Many Shurgot (Woonsocket, RI) blasted
her first collegiate home run over the left field fence with one
out. |
The Anchorwomen were
able to put the game out of reach in the following frame,
capitalizing on four Panther errors to plate six runs. Bilek drilled
an RBI-double down the left field line, while Shurgot logged her
second RBI with a bases loaded walk. The hosts pushed two more
across on a pair of errors by the visitor’s infield. Rhode Island
College also scored three in the following frame, capped by Bilek’s
second double down the left field line to push across a pair of
runners. |
Plymouth State (11-13,
3-3 LEC) sophomore pitcher Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, NH)
was the hard luck loser, giving up five hits on eight runs, three of
which were earned, while logging a strikeout. Freshman Ashley
Pinkham (Center Barnstead, NH) came on in relief to surrender
two runs on two hits. |
In the nightcap, Rhode
Island College was able to out-duel Plymouth State. Three
Anchorwomen pitcher’s combined to limit the Panthers to a lone run
on five hits, while striking out six. Sophomore starter Justine
Burgess (Uxbridge, MA) surrendered just one hit over three
innings, while freshman Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) earned
her third win of the campaign with a scoreless one and one third
innings. |
Junior first basemen
Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) went 2-for-4 from the plate
with an RBI, while freshman left fielder Jamie Mastrocola
(Everett, MA) was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Freshman center fielder Jackie Dube (Barrington, NH) also
turned in a multiple hit performance with an RBI single. |
Rhode Island College
jumped out to an early advantage with a single run in each of the
first two frames. Alexander cracked an RBI single to center in the
first, while Lotti plated Mastrocola with an RBI triple in the
second. |
The Panthers freshman
pitcher Kat Roland (Norton, MA) settled into a groove over
the next three innings, limiting the Anchorwomen to just one hit.
Roland tossed six innings, giving up four runs on nine hits.
Plymouth State was able to solve the Rhode Island College pitching
staff in the top of the sixth inning. The visitors used a bloop
double and single down the left field line to put runners on second
and third with one out. Sophomore third baseman Rachel Pothier
(Reading, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate the
Plymouth State’s lone run, while Riley fanned the next batter to
work out of the jam. |
Rhode Island College
scored a pair of insurance runs in the bottom half of the frame to
push its advantage to 4-1. Riley slammed the door shut with a strike
out and a pair of foul outs to earn her second save. |
Rhode Island
College returns to action at 12 p.m. on April 22, when the
