WARRIORS SWEEP ANCHORMEN
Nine Errors Help RIC Drop to 4-6 in Little East Action

Providence, RI—Eastern
Connecticut State University stayed unbeaten in Little East
Conference action as the Warriors downed Rhode Island College, 12-3,
and 17-13, in collegiate baseball action at Anchorman Field on
Saturday afternoon. RIC loses its fifth consecutive conference tilt
to fall to 4-6 in the LEC and 12-11 overall. The Warriors improve to
21-7 overall and 9-0 in the LEC. |

The
Anchormen jumped out to an early lead in game one, plating two runs.
Rhode Island College junior starting pitcher Eric Thibault
(Somerset, MA) kept the Warriors offense at bay until the sixth
inning. Eastern Connecticut erupted for five runs to take the lead
and never looked back. Sophomore starter Shawn Gilblair (Windham,
CT) earned the win (6-1) for ECSU, allowing two unearned runs on
four hits to go along with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Freshman shortstop Melvin Castillo (Danbury, CT) went 2-for-5
with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior second baseman Zach
Thomas (East Haddam, CT) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Thibault (2-4) took the loss, allowing five runs, three of which
were earned, on six hits to go along with four strikeouts in six
innings of work. Freshman reliever Paul Vatter (Warwick, RI)
gave up five runs, only one of which was earned, in just a third of
an inning. RIC sophomores Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI)
and Josh Cardoso (Dartmouth, MA) each went 1-for-4 with an
RBI in the loss. |

The
Anchormen responded offensively in game two, scoring five runs off
ECSU sophomore starter Jimmy Jagodzinski (Greenwich, CT) in
the second inning. RIC sophomore center fielder B.J. Doyon
(Douglas, MA) capped the frame with a two-run homer (2). The
lead was shortlived for Rhode Island College freshman starter
Bobby Germane (Barrington, RI). The Warriors put 16 runs on the
board between the fourth and sixth innings, capped by a 10-run
sixth. Rhode Island College mounted a comeback by scoring eight runs
over the last four frames, but fell short. Junior first baseman
Matt Riemer (Ellington, CT) went 5-for-5 with three RBIs, two
runs scored and two doubles. Gilblair went 3-for-5 with an RBI,
while Castillo went 2-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored.
Germane surrendered 11 runs on 10 hits in 5.1 innings. Vatter (2-2)
came on in relief and was saddled with the loss. RIC senior catcher
Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) went 3-for-6 with three RBI,
two runs scored and three doubles. Jagodzinski (5-0) earned the win,
allowing five runs on seven hits to go along with four strikeouts in
five innings. |
