RIC BOGGED DOWN BY WEATHER, WORCESTER STATE
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College left fielder Chris O’Connors (North Kingstown, RI)
capped a three-run first inning with a two-run homer over the right
field fence, but the Anchormen would not crack the scoring column
again as they dropped a 7-3 decision to Worcester State College this
afternoon in collegiate baseball action at Anchormen Field. Cold and rainy
conditions, as well as, a strong Lancers’ pitching staff bogged down
the hosts’ offensive attack. |
|
|
|
Senior catcher
Tim Henault (East Greenwich, RI) paced the Rhode Island College
(13-12) attack with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate, including his
eighth double of the campaign, and an RBI as the Anchormen were
limited to just five hits. O’Connors went 1-for-3 from the dish with
two RBIs and a run scored. |
|
|
|
Worcester State
(11-19) starting pitcher sophomore Mike
Borowiec (Spencer,
MA)
gave up three runs on four hits in the first inning before settling
down to retire 14 of the final 18 batters he faced. Borowiec earned
his third victory of the season (3-2), hurling seven strong innings
and recording seven strikeouts, while allowing just five hits and
three walks. Junior Josh Buzzell (New
Braintree, MA)
came on in relief to throw two scoreless innings, allowing just one
Anchorman to reach base, while fanning a pair. |
|
|
|
In an
action-packed first frame, Worcester State used three hits, including
a pair of doubles, to plate two runs to jump out to an early
advantage. Freshman second basemen Ryan
LaPrade (Leominster,
MA)
knocked in a RBI with a single to center field, while junior
designated hitter Nate Nelson (Worcester,
MA)
drove in a pair of runs on a double to right centerfield. LaPrade went
4-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI, while Nelson added three hits
and two RBIs on the afternoon. |
|
|
|
The first five
hitters for Rhode Island College reached safely in the bottom of the
frame, as the Anchormen powered across three runs to take its lone
lead of the afternoon. Henault put the hosts on the scoreboard with an
RBI double to center field, while O’Connors followed suit with his
second home run of the season. |
|
|
|
The Lancers
regained the advantage in the top of the third inning, as junior right
fielder Ryan Gusha (Rutland, MA) laced a two-run triple to left
center field. Nelson capped the surge with a RBI infield single to
plate Gusha, giving the visitors a 5-3 lead. Worcester State pushed
across an insurance run in the sixth and ninth innings to round of the
scoring. |
|
|
|
Rhode Island
College freshman pitcher Paul Vatter (Warwick,
RI)
saw his record dip to 2-3 as he surrendered five runs on seven hits in
four innings of work. Senior Brian Farley (North
Providence, RI)
and junior Eric Thibault (Somerset,
MA)
were effective in relief. Farley threw two and
two-thirds scoreless innings, while Thibault gave up an earned run
over the final two and a third. |
| |
|
The Anchormen will
play their third game in as many days, as they host Framingham State
on Thursday, April 26 at 4 p.m. |
