WARRIORS SPOIL SENIOR DAY FOR
GAVIN
RIC Edged by Eastern Connecticut, 13-7
|
|
Providence, RI—The Rhode Island College women’s lacrosse team
could not send its lone senior, Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, RI),
off with a victory in her final collegiate home contest, as Eastern
Connecticut State University spoiled Senior Day with a 13-7 win over
the Anchorwomen this afternoon. Gavin led the charge for the hosts
with a team-high three points. |
|
|
|
Rhode Island
College (3-9, 1-4 Little East) posted a well-balanced attack with
three student-athletes recording multiple points, paced by Gavin’s
two goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Sydney Culbertson
(North Kingstown, RI) netted a pair of goals, while freshman
midfielder Meridith Darby (Middletown, RI) scored a marker
and handed out a helper. |
|
|
|
Eastern
Connecticut (11-5, 6-0) navigated its way through the conference
circuit with an undefeated mark, earning the top seed and the right
to host the Little East Conference semifinal and championship rounds
on May 4-5. The Warriors were led by the four-goal performance of
senior midfielder Kara Bradley (North Haven, CT), while
junior attacker Lily Anderson (Portland, ME) found the back
of the net three times. Senior attacker Meghan Feraco (Norwich,
CT) also tallied multiple points with a goal and an assist. |
|
|
|
The visitors
raced out to an early four-goal advantage in the opening 12 minutes
of the first frame. Sophomore attacker Natalie Sims (Carle Place,
NY) put Eastern Connecticut on the board at just under the five
minute mark with her 16th goal of the season. Bradley scored her
first of three goals in the first half at the 6:28 mark, while
Feraco and Anderson capped the surge. |
|
|
|
Rhode Island
College finally cracked the scoring column midway through the first
stanza, when Gavin sandwiched a pair of goals between a Warriors
tally to cut the deficit to 5-2. Gavin’s latter marker was her
team-leading 46th of the campaign. The Anchorwomen continued to
whittle away at the deficit as freshman attacker Emily Conte
(North Providence, RI) fired home a feed from Gavin. That would
be as close as the hosts would get, as Eastern Connecticut closed
out the first 30 minutes with consecutive scores to enter into the
intermission leading, 7-3. |
|
|
|
Between the
pipes, Rhode Island College freshman goalie Katie Kielbasinski
(Windsor, CT) kept the contest close in the first half, making
nine of her 14 saves on the afternoon. Eastern Connecticut senior
goalie Erin Calkins (Stony Brook, NY) picked up the victory,
turning back nine Anchorwomen offerings. |
|
|
|
Rhode Island College returns to action at 1 p.m. on April 29, when
the Anchorwomen travel to Southern Maine for a Little East
Conference tilt. |
