CONSECUTIVE

Starting May 3
|
|
Providence, RI—Head Coach Maria Morin’s
Rhode Island College softball team clinched the 2007 Little East
Conference Softball Regular Season Championship for the third
straight season in a doubleheader sweep of UMass Dartmouth on Sunday
afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex. The Anchorwomen
(32-4, 12-2) tied the program record for the most conference
victories in a season (12, 2005) and earned the right host the 2007
Little East Conference Softball Tournament on May 3-6. |

The
Anchorwomen and the Corsairs (6-15, 2-10) played scoreless ball
through the first six innings of game one, until RIC loaded the
bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Junior third
baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) plated junior first
baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) with a sacrifice fly
to left field to notch the victory, 1-0. Senior starting pitcher
Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) earned her 22nd
(22-2) win of the season, firing a three-hit shutout to go along
with seven strikeouts. UMass Dartmouth sophomore pitcher Amie
Nickerson (Wrentham, MA) suffered her seventh (5-7) loss of the
season, allowing just one unearned run on five hits to the
high-powered Anchorwomen offense. |

Rhode Island College found its groove in game two, tagging UMass
Dartmouth freshman pitcher Liz Steele (Braintree, MA) for
five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. Freshman center fielder
Davia Spado (Schenectady, NY)) belted her first collegiate home
run (1) with a leadoff solo shot to left field in the third inning.
The Anchorwomen scored four runs in the fourth, highlighted by a
Lotti two-RBI single to left field. The Corsairs turned to their
sophomore catcher Kathleen L’Abbe (New Bedford, MA) to pitch
in the fifth, but she couldn’t hold the Anchorwomen back. Freshman
second baseman Mandy Shurgot (Woonsocket, RI) led off with an
infield single and scored on a Bilek RBI triple. Freshman right
fielder Amy Jackman (Toms River, NJ) doubled in Bilek, and
with the bases loaded and one out, junior shortstop Jeanne Rosa
(Milford, CT) plated Jackman with a bunt to end the game, 8-0.
Freshman pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) upped her
record to 5-0, striking out three, to earn her first collegiate
shutout. Steele (1-8) took the loss for UMass Dartmouth. |
