ANCHORWOMEN ADVANCE BEHIND
RILEY’S 13 K’s
RIC To Play at 10 a.m. on Friday
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode Island College senior
pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, RI) struck out 13
batters en route to her 23rd (23-2) win and 11th
shutout of the season in the Anchorwomen’s, 2-0, win over
sixth-seeded Plymouth State in game one of the 2007 Little East
Conference Softball Tournament at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball
Complex. |
|
|
|
Top-seeded RIC will face the loser of third-seeded Western
Connecticut and fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut (2 p.m. today) on
Thursday, May 4 at 10 a.m. The Panthers will face the loser of
second-seeded Keene State and fifth-seeded Southern Maine (Noon) at
4 p.m. today. |

|
|
Plymouth State freshman starting pitcher Kat Roland (Norton, MA)
kept the Anchorwomen off the board until the fourth inning. Senior
catcher Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, MA) led off
with a double and was lifted for freshman pinch runner Robyn
Zemienieski (Old Saybrook, CT). Senior third baseman Krystal
Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) laid down a sacrifice bunt that was
misplayed by junior first baseman Danielle Normand
(Rumford, RI), allowing Bilek to reach safely and Zemienieski to
advance to third. A wild pitch, while freshman designated player
Mandy Shurgot (Woonsocket, RI) was at bat, allowed Zemienieski
to score with what proved to be the game-winning run. |
|
|
|
The
Anchorwomen tacked on an insurance run in the fifth as freshman
center fielder Jackie Dube (Barrington, NH) was hit by a
pitch to start the frame. With one out, junior first baseman
Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) hit a deep fly ball to left field
that was dropped by Plymouth State sophomore Leanne Barry
(Auburn, NH), allowing Dube to score all the way from first. |
|
|
|
That
would be all the offense Riley would need to lift the Anchorwomen to
victory. Roland suffers her 10th loss (6-10), allowing
two runs, one of which was earned, on two hits to go along with two
strikeouts. |
