ANCHORWOMEN ELIMINATE OWLS, 4-1
Shurgot & Taverna Lead RIC in Breakthrough Sixth
Providence, RI—Top-seeded Rhode Island
College used a two-out, four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth
inning to eliminate second-seeded Keene State, 4-1, from the 2007
Little East Conference Softball Tournament at the Dayna A. Bazar
Softball Complex. |
The
Anchorwomen (35-5) will face third-seeded Western Connecticut at
12:30 p.m. this afternoon. Rhode Island College lost, 2-0, to the
Colonials yesterday, and will have to defeat WestConn twice in order
to win the LEC Championship. |
Keene State (27-7) scored their only run in the first inning as
sophomore third baseman Jenna Patnode (Surry, NH) reached on
an error, stole second and continued on to third via a throwing
error. Junior second baseman Jessica Starkey (Keene, NH)
singled in Patnode to put the Owls on top, 1-0. |
KSC
junior starting pitcher Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, NH) took
over from there, pitching 5.2 innings of shutout ball until the
Anchorwomen broke through in the sixth. |
After retiring the first two batters, RIC senior catcher Kristyn
Alexander (East Wareham, MA) singled and was lifted for freshman
pinch runner Robin Zemienieski (Old Saybrook, CT). Junior
third baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) followed suit
with a single to put runners on first and second. Freshman shortstop
Mandy Shurgot (Woonsocket, RI) singled to left field to bring
in Zemienieski in with the tying run and advance Bilek to second. |
Keene State senior pitcher Erin Fuoroli (Warwick, RI) came in
for Nicholson and promptly walked sophomore second baseman
Justine Burgess (Uxbridge, MA). With the bases loaded, freshman
designated player Cassie Taverna (Bedford, MA) singled up the
middle to plate both Bilek and Shurgot, giving RIC a 3-1 lead. The
Anchorwomen weren’t done as Burgess stole third and scored on a
throwing error. |
Rhode Island College senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North
Providence, RI) slammed the door in the seventh to earn her 25th
(25-3) win of the season. Riley allowed just one unearned run on
four hits to go along with six strikeouts. |
