ANCHORWOMEN DOWN COLONIALS, 4-2
Force Decisive Game 11 For Little East Title
Providence, RI—Top-seeded Rhode Island
College came from behind to defeat third-seeded Western Connecticut,
4-2, in game 10 of the 2007 Little East Conference Softball
Tournament at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex. The Anchorwomen
and the Colonials are both 3-1 at the tourney, which forces a
decisive Championship Game in this double elimination format to
determine the winner to be played at 3 p.m. |
The
Colonials (24-12) handed RIC just its third shutout loss of the
season in a 2-0 win yesterday in game eight. The Anchorwomen (36-5)
had to play an elimination game prior to the contest, knocking out
second-seeded Keene State, 4-1, with a four-run outburst in the
bottom of the sixth. |
WestConn sophomore shortstop Loren Angiolillo (Wolcott, CT)
opened the second inning with a line shot that ricocheted off of RIC
junior third baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) for a
double. With two out, Angiolillo stole third and scored as the
attempted throw sailed into left field. |
The
Colonials made it, 2-0, in the third as junior left fielder Megan
Brunell (North Attleboro, MA) doubled and was sacrificed to
third. Senior first baseman Megan Cirigliano (Newington, CT)
laid down a bunt single that scored Brunell. |
Rhode Island College lifted senior starting pitcher Nicole Riley
(North Providence, RI), who had pitched the complete game
victory over Keene State in the prior game, for freshman pitcher
Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) who walked the next two batters to
load the bases with one out. |
The
Anchorwomen brought on freshman pitcher Jamie Sacco (Bellingham,
MA) who fielded freshman pinch hitter Julia Witzig’s (Rowley,
MA) grounder and cut down freshman pinch runner Katelyn
Farrell (Stratford, CT) at the plate for the second out. Sacco
then got junior designated player Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ)
to pop out to end the threat. |
Rhode Island College cut the deficit to one run in the bottom of the
third as junior first baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT)
singled. With two down, senior catcher Kristyn Alexander (East
Wareham, MA) doubled to left field and Lotti was able to score
as WestConn freshman center fielder Becca Andruskiwec (Orange,
CT) lost control of the ball. |
The
Anchorwomen broke out in the fifth as Bilek notched a bases-loaded
RBI bunt, freshman second baseman Mandy Shurgot (Woonsocket, RI)
hit a sacrifice fly and sophomore designated player Justine
Burgess (Uxbridge, MA) capped the three-run frame with an
RBI-single. |
Sacco slammed the door, throwing 4.2 innings of scoreless relief to
earn her fifth win (5-2) of the season. |
WestConn junior starting pitcher Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT)
took the loss (12-4), allowing two runs on four hits to go along
with six strikeouts. Slie had not allowed an earned run in 23
innings of work during the 2007 tourney prior to the RIC fifth
inning. |
Rhode Island College established a new school record for wins in a
season (36) with the win, surpassing the previous record (35) set by
the 2006 edition. |
