Providence, RI—Rhode Island College came from behind to defeat M.I.T., 32-12 in a battle of New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) opponents. The Anchormen trailed, 12-8, at the midway point of the match before reeling off five straight bouts to earn the victory. Rhode Island College improves to 1-0 in the NECCWA and the Pilgrim Wrestling League, while the Engineers fall to 0-1 in both leagues.

 

Sophomore Steve Goncalves (Cumberland, RI) evened the contest at 12-12 with a decisive, 17-7, win over senior Bao Truong (Quincy, MA) at 125 lbs. Senior Ray Hanley (Wantagh, NY) kept after sophomore Greg Wellman (Chelmsford, MA) and despite leading, 7-2, late in the second period, earned the victory by pin at 4:59. Freshman Sean Miele (Johnston, RI) won by forfeit at 141 lbs. and junior Mike Bonora (Nutley, NJ) bumped up to 149 lbs. to down rookie Corey Kubber, 17-7, to seal the win.

 

In upcoming action, RIC will compete at the Doug Parker Invitational, hosted by Springfield College on Saturday, Nov. 18.
