Gavin Named to NSCAA All-Region Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Rhode Island College senior midfielder Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth, R.I.) was recently named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III All-New England Teams. A third-team selection, Gavin is the first Anchorwomen to earn All-New England recognition in the program’s 11-year history.

A four-year starter, Gavin closed out her career ranked third on the all-time Rhode Island College assists list with 15, while also sitting in the third spot for helpers in a single-season (8). This season, the Little East All-Conference first-team selection registered a career-high 16 points, on four goals and eight assists, in 22 games. She was fourth in the conference circuit in assists, while fourth on the Anchorwomen in points. Gavin registered a season-high three points on three separate occasions this season, most recently against Little East rival UMass-Dartmouth on Oct. 4. She also earned the team’s Most Valuable Player Award at the end-of-the-season banquet. In 78 career games, Gavin scored 51 points, on 18 goals and 15 assists.

Gavin and her classmates will graduate with the most wins (41) and highest winning percentage (.538) in Rhode Island College women’s soccer history. Prior to the arrival of the Class of ’07, the Anchorwomen had just one season with a winning record. The 2006 season marks the third consecutive winning season.

Under the stewardship of Head Coach Denis Chartier, Rhode Island College posted an overall record of 14-8-0, including a 3-4 mark within the Little East, and shattered nearly all of the program’s single-season records. The Anchorwomen established a new benchmark for wins (14), four more than any previous squad. Rhode Island College also won nine consecutive games between Sept. 9 and Oct. 4, 2006, adding an additional three to the previous standard, set by the 1999 and 2005 clubs. The Anchorwomen also earned the program’s first berth to the ECAC New England Tournament, where the No. 4 seed Brandeis University needed an overtime session to sneak past Rhode Island College, 3-2.
