ANCHORWOMEN SNAP OWLS’ THREE-GAME WINNING STREAK
Martin’s 12 Points Leads All Scorers

Providence,
RI—Rhode Island College defeated Westfield State, 54-34, in a
low-scoring affair at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon. The
Anchorwomen’s 54 points were their lowest offensive output of the
season, while the Owls’ compiled their lowest point total, 34, of the
year as well. Both teams struggled taking care of the basketball, each
turning the ball over 23 times in the contest. |

RIC pulled ahead
late in the first half to take a 25-18 lead into the break. The
Anchorwomen opened the second frame on a 13-2 run to take a 38-20 lead
and a freshman guard Kirstyn Storti (Exeter, RI) layup at 7:55
built a 24-point lead, 48-24, to seal the win. |

Rhode Island
College sophomore guard Tyla Martin (Cumberland, RI) led all
scorers with 12 points, on 5-for-9 shooting, to go along with four
steals and three rebounds. Senior forward Kari Geisler (Deerfield,
NH) pulled in 11 rebounds, including 10 in the first half. Junior
forward Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI) came off the bench with an
eight-point, eight-rebound effort. |

Free throws played
a factor as the Anchorwomen connected on 14 of 19 attempts for a 74
percent effort. Rhode Island College has won four of its last five
games. |

|
The Owls, who shot
just 26 percent (13-for-51) from the field, see a modest three-game
winning streak come to an end in the loss. Westfield State is 1-5 away
from home this season. Sophomore guard Lauren Sylvain (Hadley, MA)
posted seven points, four boards and two steals. |

|
RIC is off for
finals and the holidays. The Anchorwomen will resume the season on
Saturday, Jan. 6 at Eastern Connecticut. |
