ANCHORWOMEN FALL TO FIFTH-RANKED HUSKIES, 75-63 USM’s Fifield Earns 500^th Career Win

     Providence, RI—University of Southern Maine Head Women’s Basketball Coach Gary Fifield earned his 500^th career win in a 75-63 victory over Rhode Island College at The Murray Center on Tuesday evening. Fifield’s career record is 500-80 and he owns the highest winning percentage amongst active Division III coaches in the nation.

The Anchorwomen put a scare into the fifth-ranked Huskies in the early going, trailing by just two points heading into the break. Southern Maine exploded out of the gates in the second frame, going on a 12-2 run. The Anchorwomen battled back to get within two until sophomore guard Trisha MacDonald (Millinocket, ME) nailed a three as the shot clock was running down with 3:52 remaining in the game. RIC would not get any closer, falling to 8-5 overall and 1-3 in the Little East Conference. The Huskies improve to 11-1 overall, 4-0 in the Little East and extend their conference winning streak to 66 games.

USM senior forward Ashley Marble (Topsfield, ME), the two-time LEC Player of the Year, was a one-player wrecking crew with 22 points, 11 boards, two assists, two steals and one block in 24 minutes. Sophomore forward Stacey Kent (Northwood, NH) had 14 points, five boards and four steals. Freshman forward Haley Johnson (West Simsbury, CT) had five points and six boards in 17 minutes off the bench.

Rhode Island College sophomore guard Tyla Martin (Cumberland, RI) had 19 points, three assists and two steals in a losing effort. Junior forward Josalee Danieli (New Gloucester, ME) had 16 points, five boards, three assists and two steals.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Pine Manor on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 6 p.m.
