LAURIE & CALENDA SCORE AS
ANCHORWOMEN
OPEN CAMPAIGN IN, 2-2, TIE
Providence, RI—Despite
outshooting St. John Fisher, 26-13, Rhode Island College battled the
Cardinals to a 2-2 tie in the season-opening contest for both clubs.
St. John
Fisher got on the board in the seventh minute as sophomore
midfielder Mary Dougherty (Liverpool, NY) settled a pass from
freshman defender Danielle Pommerville (Macedon, NY) from
25-yards out and lofted a shot that eluded RIC junior goalkeeper
Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT). The Cardinals went into the
first intermission with a one-goal lead, even though Rhode Island
College led in the shot differential (8-2). |
The
Anchorwomen kept up the pressure in the second stanza as senior
defender Mallary Bileau (Woonsocket, RI) sent senior
midfielder Lindsay Laurie (Warwick, RI) in on a breakaway to
tie the contest, 1-1, in the 52nd minute. |
Rhode Island
College took the lead in the 78th minute as Laurie
crossed a pass to senior forward Gina Calenda (Warren, RI)
who fired a shot into the back of the net from 10 yards out. |
The lead,
however, was short-lived as St. John Fisher as freshman forward
Meagan Gee (Dansville, NY) beat Pyzynski with a long-range shot
from the corner in the 79th minute. |
Both clubs
had their opportunities in the remaining 11 minutes of regulation
and in overtime, but the game ended in a draw. |
Pyzynski made
four saves, while Cardinals’ sophomore netminder Ashley Martin
(Marcellus, NY) made eight saves. |
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will host cross-city rival Johnson &
Wales on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 4 p.m. |
