ANCHORWOMEN BLITZ WILDCATS, 4-1
DONAHUE NOTCHES FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL
Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College women’s soccer team notched their first win of
the 2007 campaign in a 4-1 victory over Johnson & Wales on Tuesday
afternoon. The Anchorwomen outshot JWU, 43-8, and carried play for
almost the entire contest. |
Senior back
Kerry Donahue (Rehoboth, MA), who was playing forward for the
first time at RIC, banked a shot off the bottom of the crossbar in
the 11th minute for her first collegiate goal, which put
the Anchorwomen up, 1-0. |
Johnson &
Wales capitalized on a RIC defensive breakdown, which led to a
two-on-one rush. In the 42nd minute, Wildcat freshman
Jen Hurley (Freeport, NY) dished a pass to freshman midfielder
Colleen Marasco (Endwell, NY) who deposited a shot in the far
left corner to even the contest, 1-1. |
The tie was
short-lived as freshman midfielder Kristina Haughey (Lincoln, RI)
put RIC on top, 2-1, with her first collegiate goal just 33 seconds
later. Freshman midfielder Rebecca Corregan (Mendham, NJ)
earned her first collegiate point with an assist on the play. |
RIC added two
insurance goals as sophomore midfielder Christina Tavana
(Middletown, CT) and senior forward Gina Calenda (Warren, RI)
scored in the 73rd and 90th minute,
respectively. Calenda needs just nine goals to tie the Rhode Island
College all-time mark (38). Senior forward Lindsay Laurie
(Warwick, RI) was credited with an assist on each goal, raising
her team-leading point total to five. Freshman midfielder Chelsea
Creamer (Coventry, RI) recorded her first collegiate point with
a helper on Tavana’s tally. |
JWU sophomore
Kate Nast (Quakertown, PA) tried to hold back the onslaught,
making a season-high 17 saves. RIC junior goalkeeper Krissie
Pyzynski (Bristol, CT) made one save to earn her first win of
the year. |
