FIVE-GOAL OUTBURST LEADS RIC TO
FIRST LEC WIN
Kelley, Sagastume & Talavera Pace Anchormen Offensively
Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College men’s soccer team defeated Little East
Conference rival UMass Boston, 5-2, to improve to 4-3 overall and
1-0 in league play this afternoon. The Beacons fall to 3-2 overall
and 0-1 in the LEC. |
The Anchormen
had scored just six goals in the club’s first six games prior to
today’s action. Sophomore midfielder Ryan Kelley (Hope, RI)
and classmate forward Jose Talavera (Providence, RI), along
with freshman striker Miguel Sagastume (Providence, RI), each
recorded a goal and an assist in the win. |
Sagastume got
the ball rolling for RIC in the fifth minute, breaking down the wing
and crossing a pass to Talavera who buried a shot in the open
corner. The Beacons struck back in the eighth and 13th
minute, respectively, on free kick goals by junior midfielder
Romeo Zeqo (Medford, MA). First, Zeqo first launched a shot from
20-yards out that deflected off the RIC defensive wall to elude
sophomore goalkeeper Dereck Loisel (Warwick, RI). Five
minutes later, Zeqo quickly shot from the top of the box before the
Anchormen could set their defense. |
The Beacons’
lead was short-lived as sophomore midfielder Matt Turbitt
(Providence, RI) headed in a Talavera pass for the equalizer in
the 16th minute. The Anchormen took the lead for good in
the 35th minute when UMB was whistled for a handball
inside the box. Junior defender Josh Silva (Dartmouth, MA)
stepped up and scored his third goal of the season, all of which
have come on penalty kicks. With just 53 seconds left in the first
half, Kelley squeezed a shot in off a RIC corner kick to give the
Anchormen a 4-2 advantage heading into intermission. |
Rhode Island
College added an insurance goal in the 78th minute as
junior back Robert Sturdahl (Coventry, RI) sent in Sagastume
for his first collegiate goal. |
Loisel made
nine saves to improve his record to 2-1, while UMB junior netminder
Paul Maniscalco (Hanover, MA) made five saves as his record
dips to 2-2. |
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday,
Sept. 18 at 3:30 p.m., while the Beacons will host Mass. Maritime on
the same date. |
