ANCHORMEN WRAP UP HOMESTAND WITH,
1-1, TIE
Kelley’s Second Half Goal Knots Contest

Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College and Clark University battled to a 1-1 tie in
collegiate men’s soccer action on Wednesday evening. The Anchormen
concluded a four-game home stand with a 2-0-2 mark as they are now
5-3-2 on the season. The Cougars played to their fourth double
overtime tie in the squad’s last six contests. Clark is now 2-2-4
overall. |

The Cougars
got on the board in the 35th minute as sophomore
midfielder Tom Ashley (Boulder, CO) broke down the right wing
and fired a shot across the box, which deflected off RIC senior
defender James Nigrelli (Ashaway, RI) and into the net for an
own-goal. |

|
|
The Anchormen
evened the game up, 1-1, in the 52nd minute as freshman
defender Joe Sousa (Cumberland, RI) fired a free kick from 30
yards out that was redirected by sophomore midfielder Ryan Kelley
(Hope, RI) for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. It was
Sousa’s first career assist and point. |

RIC had
several quality chances to win the game as junior midfielder
Brandon Migliore (Coventry, RI) and senior forward
Derek Rocha (Fall River, MA) hit the crossbar and post,
respectivel,y in the second half and overtime. |
|
|
|
For the
second straight game, RIC outshot its opponent, holding a 25-13
advantage in the game and a 14-5 mark in the second half. Senior
goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) made five saves as his
record moves to 2-2-1. Clark junior goalkeeper Peter Wise
(Providence, RI) made seven stops as he is currently 2-2-4. |

In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will play at Little East Conference
rival western Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m. Five of
RIC’s next six games are on the road. The Cougars will host WPI at
1:30 p.m. on Sept. 29. |
