NATHAN HELPS COLONIALS SINK
ANCHORWOMEN
WestConn Stays Unbeaten in
Little East Play

Providence, RI—
Junior forward Catherine Nathans (New Fairfield, CT) figured
in each of Western Connecticut’s goals as the Colonials defeated
Rhode Island College, 3-0, in collegiate women’s soccer action on
Saturday afternoon. WestConn improves to 7-1-1 overall and remains
unbeaten in the Little East Conference with a 3-0 mark. The
Anchorwomen suffer their third consecutive loss, and their second
straight conference defeat, falling to 3-5-1 overall and 1-2 in
league play. |

It was a
well-played first half between the two club’s with Nathans
converting on a freshman forward Jennifer Duran (Uncasville, CT)
pass in the 32nd’ minute to put Western Connecticut up by
one goal. RIC senior forward Lindsay Laurie (Warwick, RI) had
nearly given the Anchorwomen the lead on the prior play, just
missing a goal with a shot that whistled by the far post.

The Colonials
held an 11-7 shot advantage heading into the break, but it didn’t
take long for Nathans to strike again. RIC freshman midfielder
Chelsea Creamer (Coventry, RI) was called for a foul inside the
box, which resulted in a penalty kick. Nathans buried the shot for
her sixth goal of the season in the 54th minute. Just
under six minutes later, junior midfielder Amy Corchard (Monroe,
CT) and Nathans set up freshman forward Lauren Matthews’
(Monroe, CT) fifth goal of the season to conclude the game’s
scoring. |

WestConn
senior goalkeeper Jenna Cappaellieri (Stratford, CT) made
four saves to up her record to 7-1-1 overall and earn her fifth
shutout. RIC junior goalkeeper Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, CT)
made five saves as her record falls to 3-4-1. Freshman Kelly
Young (Narragansett, RI) made two saves in 17 minutes of action
of the bench. |

The Colonials
outshot the Anchorwomen, 28-12, in the game, including a 17-5 effort
in the second stanza. |
|
|
|
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will play at Wesleyan on Wednesday,
Oct. 3 at 4:30 p.m. The Colonials will host Westfield State on
Wednesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. |
