JORDAN’S GOALS LIFT RIC PAST
CARDINALS, 2-1
Rookie’s First Collegiate
Tallies Snap Three-Game Losing Skid
|
|
Middletown, CT—Rhode
Island College freshman forward Ashley Jordan (North Attleboro,
MA) scored the first two goals of her career to pace the
Anchorwomen past homestanding Wesleyan, 2-1. It was only the fourth
time the two teams have met and RIC is 3-1 to date. The win snaps a
three-game losing streak for the Anchorwomen, who improve to 4-5-1
on the season. The Cardinals fall to 1-7 overall. |

Wesleyan dominated the opening 30 minutes of the contest,
registering the first eight shots on goal with freshman goalkeeper
Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) making one outstanding stop on a
point-blank shot 17 minutes into the contest. Jordan cashed in on
RIC's initial shot of the contest, receiving a swing pass from the
right side by freshman defender Kristina Haughey (Lincoln, RI),
dribbling up a bit and pulling back to her right to let a
Wesleyan defender run past, then launch a 20-yard shot over Wesleyan
goaltender junior Andrea Giuliano into the far corner of the
net. The goal came at 31:40. |

|
Eight minutes later, Jordan made it 2-0 as senior forward Gina
Calenda (Warren, RI) moved down deep on the left and sent a
cross in front of the Wesleyan net, which Giuliano got a hand on,
but it deflected right to Jordan standing on the doorstep, and she
tapped it into the open right portion of the goal. None of the
players involved in the RIC scoring started the game. Wesleyan got
one back 14 minutes into the second half. Sophomore Beth
Kenworthy took a free kick from 30 yards out, which she chipped
up over a wall of RIC defenders onto the head of freshman Cora
Lautze. Lautze elevated the ball just enough to tip it over the
onrushing RIC goalie. It was the first career goal for Lautze. |

Wesleyan had a few more good chances to even the count but Pirri,
playing just her third game, ended the contest with nine saves. RIC
put just four shots on net in the game. Two went in, one was saved
by junior Gavi Elkind, who played the second half in goal for
Wesleyan, and the other was kicked aside by Wesleyan defender senior
Marcia Whitehead during the first half. All seven of
Wesleyan's loses this season have come by a one-goal margin. |
