GODBOUT’S GOAL LEADS RIC PAST KEENE
STATE
Anchorwomen Earn
First-Ever Win Against the Owls
|
|
Keene, NH—Rhode
Island College senior forward Brittney Godbout (Cranston, RI)
scored the lone goal as the Anchorwomen downed Keene State, 1-0, in
Little East Conference women’s soccer action. RIC, which raises its
record to 5-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the LEC, registered its first win
ever against Keene State. The Anchorwomen had been 0-9-1 all-time
vs. the Owls prior to today’s win. The Owls drop to 6-6-1 overall
and 2-2 in league action. |
|
|
|
Taking a
through ball from Chelsea Creamer (Coventry, RI) in the third
minute, Godbout broke in alone after the KSC defense anticipated an
off-sides call. The Owls had a chance to tie the score three minutes
later, but Kendra Spencer’s drive to the top corner was
knocked away by RIC freshman goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol,
RI). |
|
|
|
Senior
midfielder Michaela Bileau (Woonsocket, RI) had an
opportunity to extend the Anchorwomen’s lead when her shot clanged
off the crossbar midway in the first half. |
|
|
|
KSC pressured
the Anchorwomen for the equalizer in the second half. Michelle
Boland (Worcester, MA) and Renee Halsey (Francestown, NH)
had opportunities to tie the game 10 minutes into the period.
Boland’s shot hit off the post and a RIC defender blocked Halsy’s
bid. Minutes later, Pirri stopped a close-range shot by Kathleen
Keniston (Minneapolis, MN). |
|
|
|
KSC’s best
chance came when Ally Beadle’s (East Hartford, CT) shot was
tipped by Pirri and rolled toward the goal. RIC senior defender
Kerry Donahue (Rehoboth, MA) made a great play and knocked the
ball away before it could cross the goal line. Later in the half,
Katie Bradford (Lebanon, NH) went around the corner, but her bid
was denied by Pirri, with 16 minutes to play. |
|
|
|
The Owls had
two more chances to tie the game in the closing minutes of play, but
Pirri was up to the task. She stopped a header by Keniston with 2:44
to go and a drive by Nora Mahoney (Belchertown, MA) with 15
seconds to play. |
|
|
|
Pirri stopped
a season-high 12 shots to record her first shutout of the season. Samantha
Hirsh (Holliston, MA) finished the game with five saves for the
Owls. Keene State is at Westfield State on Wednesday. RIC will host
Roger Williams on Monday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. |
