AMANDA daCUNHA WINS IT FOR HAWKS
IN DOUBLE OVERTIME
Providence, RI—The
Rhode Island College women’s soccer team, fresh off a signature
victory over Little East Conference rival Keene State this past
Saturday, lost, 1-0, in double overtime to Roger Williams at the RIC
Soccer Field on Columbus Day. RIC sees its record dip to 5-6-1
overall, while the Hawks win their third straight and improve to
10-3. |
The
Anchorwomen dictated the pace through the first 45 minutes, heading
into halftime with a 15-5 advantage in shots. Roger Williams
sophomore goalkeeper Jenny Schermerhorn (Sherborn, MA) made
seven first-half saves to keep the game scoreless. |
The Hawks
turned the game around in the second half and outshot the
Anchorwomen, 12-10. Both teams had chances in regulation, but
neither team could find the back of the net. |
The game
nearly ended just two minutes into the first overtime as RIC senior
forward Brittney Godbout (Cranston, RI) was stopped by
Schermerhorn on a point blank chance. On the ensuing play, Rhode
Island College senior midfielder Michaela Bileau (Woonsocket, RI)
nearly put the ball in her own net on an attempted clearing pass
that hit her own goal post. Play settled down after that as the game
went to a second overtime period. |
The game
ended when RWU freshman midfielder Lindsey Crepeau (Englewood,
CO) crossed a pass to sophomore forward Amanda daCunha
(Wethersfield, CT) who fired a laser from 25-yards out that
eluded RIC freshman goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) in
the 104th minute. It was daCunha’s seventh goal of the
season. |
Schermerhorn
made 10 saves to earn the win, while Pirri made seven stops as her
record falls to 2-2. RIC held the advantage in shots, 28-21. |
The
Anchorwomen remain winless in overtime contests (0-2-1) on the
season. In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at
Bridgewater State on Wednesday, Oct. 10. Roger Williams will host
Anna Maria on Oct. 10. |
