HUMMEL’S OVERTIME HEROICS
WINS IT
FOR RIC
Anchorwomen Avoid
Second-Half Miscues to Earn Third LEC Win
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College senior midfielder Abby Hummel (North Kingstown,
RI) scored in the 94th minute to lead the Anchorwomen
to a 3-2 overtime win against Little East Conference rival Plymouth
State. RIC improves to 6-7-1 overall and 3-2 in the LEC. Plymouth
State, which loses for the fourth time in five games, falls to 5-7
overall and 1-4 in league play. |
|
|
|
The
Anchorwomen were relentless offensively throughout regulation and
into overtime, outshooting the Panthers by a three to one margin,
36-12, for the game. From the opening whistle, RIC came out firing,
holding an 11-2 shot margin through the first 20 minutes. Senior
midfielder Krista MacKinnon (Exeter, RI) put the Anchorwomen
on top, 1-0, in the 38th minute, beating a PSU defender
by crossing over and firing a shot from just inside of 18-yards that
eluded Panther senior goalkeeper Ashley Riberdy (Manchester, NH). |
|
|
|
Rhode Island
College senior defender Kerry Donahue (Rehoboth, MA) put RIC
up, 2-0, three minutes later, by intercepting a PSU clearing pass 25
yards out and took the ball with authority to the net for her third
goal of the season. |
|
|
|
The
Anchorwomen went into halftime with the lead and holding an 18-6
advantage in shots. Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Pirri (Bristol,
RI) made four saves and gave way to junior Krissie Pyzynski
(Bristol, CT). |
|
|
|
Despite
outshooting PSU, 16-6, in the second half, the Panthers capitalized
on two RIC defensive breakdowns to tie the game. PSU sophomore
forward Stacy DiSabato (Manchester, NH) launched a free kick
from 45-yards out that shorthopped Pyzynski and deflected right to
freshman forward Alex Marcell (Pittsford, VT), who buried her
fifth goal of the season from the doorstep in the 72nd
minute. The Panthers tied the game in the 94th minute as
senior forward Jaimee Coombs (Peabody, MA) crossed a pass
through the box, which resulted in a scramble in front of Pyzynski.
Senior midfielder Georgia Rooney (Kent, CT) ended up with the
ball and scored her third goal of the season. |
|
|
|
Pirri
re-entered the game after the Panthers’ second tally and the contest
went into overtime. After an injury timeout, RIC senior forward
Brittney Godbout (Cranston, RI) crossed a pass along the top of
the box to Hummel, who recorded her first goal of the season and
lifted RIC to victory. |
|
|
|
Pirri picked
up the win, raising her record to 3-3, while Riberdy, who made 10
saves, sees her record dip to 5-7. It was the first overtime win of
the season (1-2-1) for RIC, while Plymouth State remains winless
(0-2) when going to an extra session. |
