HUMMEL SENDS RIC SENIORS OUT WITH
WIN
Anchorwomen Secure Home
Game in Upcoming LEC Tourney
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College senior midfielder Abby Hummel’s (North Kingstown,
RI) goal in 28th minute lifted the Anchorwomen to a
1-0 shutout win over Eastern Connecticut at the RIC Soccer Field on
Saturday afternoon. |
|
|
|
Rhode Island
College improves to 8-7-1 overall and 4-2 in the Little East
Conference. The victory assures the Anchorwomen of a home game in
the upcoming Little East Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament, which
begins on Oct. 30. The club’s four LEC wins are the most in a single
season in program history. The Anchorwomen, who are currently tied
for second in the LEC, have never finished higher than fourth
overall in the league standings. |
|
|
|
The win snaps
a six-game losing streak to the Warriors. RIC last downed ECSU, 2-1,
in overtime during the 2000 campaign. |
|
|
|
Eastern
Connecticut, which falls to 9-5-1 overall and 4-2 in the LEC, proved
to be a worthy adversary as the Warriors outshot the Anchorwomen by
more than a two-to-one margin, 24-11. RIC freshman goalkeeper
Maddie Pirri (Bristol, RI) and her defense were up to the task,
leading the Anchorwomen to their second straight shutout and their
third overall. Pirri made six saves as her record improves to 5-3
and is yet to surrender a goal in the conference circuit. |
|
|
|
RIC found the
back of the net, capitalizing on an Eastern Connecticut foul, with
17 minutes remaining in the first half. Senior defender Kerry
Donahue (Rehoboth, MA) launched a free kick from 35 yards out
that Hummel headed past Eastern Connecticut senior goalkeeper
Megan Gloster (Agawam, MA) for the game-winner. It was the
second consecutive LEC win that Hummel, who also notched the
overtime winner vs. Plymouth State a week ago, has scored the
decisive goal. |
|
|
|
Gloster, who
played the first half and made two stops, takes the loss as her
record dips to 4-1-1. She gave way to sophomore netminder Kim
Church (Farmington, CT) who played the second half and made one
save. |
|
|
|
It was Senior
Day for the Anchorwomen as Donahue, Hummel, defender Mallary
Bileau (Woonsocket, RI), midfielder Michaela Bileau
(Woonsocket, RI), forward Gina Calenda (Warren, RI),
forward Jessica Cardinal (Harrisville, RI), forward
Brittney Godbout (Cranston, RI), midfielder Lindsay Laurie
(Warwick, RI) and midfielder Krista MacKinnon (Exeter, RI)
were honored with their families prior to the start of the game. |
|
|
|
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will play at Salem State on Wednesday,
Oct. 24, before closing out the regular season at LEC foe Southern
Maine on Oct. 27. Eastern Connecticut will host Trinity on Oct. 24. |
