WARRIORS BLANK ANCHORMEN, 1-0
Neves Stops Seven in LEC Loss
Willimantic,
CT –
Rhode Island College lost for the second straight
game and suffered its fourth defeat in the club’s last five games as
Eastern Connecticut downed the Anchormen, 1-0, in collegiate men’s
soccer action on Saturday afternoon. The Anchormen fall to 7-7-2
overall and 3-2-1 in the Little East Conference with two games left
to play in the regular season. The Warriors improve to 8-6-2 overall
and capture sole possession on second place in the LEC with a 4-1-1
mark. |
It was a
low-scoring affair as Eastern Connecticut edged RIC, 13-8, in shots
on the day. ECSU sophomore midfielder Nicholas Boretti
(Marshfield, MA) netted his sixth goal, and fourth game-winner,
in the 43rd minute, off of junior back Kyle Bedini’s
(Manchester, CT) free kick. |
Rhode Island
College senior goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) made seven
saves as his record falls to 3-5-1. ECSU senior goalkeeper Jay
Barney (Mansfield, CT) made five saves to record his 19th
career shutout.
Since allowing four goals in 60 minutes to Rhode Island College in
his freshman season, Barney has posted 290 consecutive shutout
minutes against the Anchormen. In last year’s regular-season
finale, Barney made a season-high 12 saves in a scoreless
110-minute duel at Providence. |
Barney
needed one outstanding save to net the shutout. In the second half,
he timed his leap perfectly to punch a shot over the crossbar and
preserve Eastern’s 1-0 advantage. The Anchormen managed to put only
five of their eight shots on net against Barney, three in the first
half and two in the second. |
Boretti’s winning strike came
just seven minutes after he knocked a header off a crossing pass
from Boisvert just over the crossbar. They were his only two shots
of the match. |
Eastern
had three outstanding chances to score in the opening minutes of the
match, but Rhode Island senior keeper Jadon Neves made saves on all
three against Eastern’s top scorers. Junior forward Rukevwe
Ehwarieme (Norwich) sandwiched two prime chances around one by
sophomore forward Maxim Fantl (West Hartford), but Neves came
up big on all three bids. |
Rhode
Island played the final 8:23 a man down after freshman Miguel
Sagastume (Providence, RI) was sent off for rough play as the
team’s were preparing for a Rhode Island free kick. |
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will host No. 2 Amherst on Tuesday,
Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. Eastern Connecticut will host Fitchburg State on
Thursday, Oct. 25. |
