ROTHKOPF’S GOAL LEADS JEFFS PAST
ANCHORMEN
Neves Stops Season-High 11 in Tough Loss
Providence, RI –
Amherst
College freshman forward Ian Rothkopf (Harvard, MA) snapped a
scoreless game in the 82nd minute with his third goal of
the season to lift the Jeffs past Rhode Island College, 1-0, at the
RIC Soccer Field on Tuesday evening. |
The 12th-ranked
Jeffs held RIC to a season-low seven shots as they improve to 12-1
overall. The Anchormen fall to 7-8-2 and suffer their fifth shutout
loss of the season. |
Although
scoring opportunities were tough to come by, RIC missed a great
chance to take the lead early in the game. During a scramble in the
box in the seventh minute, the ball found its way to sophomore
midfielder Ryan Kelley (Hope, RI). He chipped the ball over
Amherst junior goalkeeper Jeffrey Grover (Framingham, MA),
who had come out of his net, but it was cleared out of harm’s way by
his defense. |
The Jeffs
continued to pump shots at Rhode Island College senior goalkeeper
Jadon Neves (Warren, RI), but were unable to find the back of
the net. The Anchormen were forced to play the final 56 minutes of
the game a man down when junior back Robert Sturdahl (Coventry,
RI) was sent off with a red card in the 34th minute. |
It looked
like the game was headed for an extra session before Amherst netted
the decisive marker with under 10 minutes remaining. Senior forward
Taylor Downs (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY) crossed a pass from the
left flank that Rothkopf re-directed for the game-winner. |
Grover made
one save to earn his fourth shutout and 10th (10-1) win.
Neves made a season-high 11 stops as his record falls to 3-6-1. |
In upcoming
action, Rhode Island College will battle first-place Southern Maine
in the Little East Conference regular season finale on Saturday,
Oct. 27 at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day as Neves, senior defender
James Nigrelli (Ashaway, RI) and midfielder Derek Rocha
(Fall River, MA) will be honored prior to the
start. Amherst will host NESCAC rival Williams on Saturday, Oct. 27
at 11 a.m. |
