VIKINGS DOWN ANCHORMEN, 10-3
Salem State Plates Eight In First Three Frames

Salem, MA—Salem State jumped out to a 3-0
lead in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 10-3
win over Rhode Island College on Thursday afternoon at Salem State
Field. |

|
The
Vikings (10-5) scored three runs on two hits off of RIC (8-5) junior
starting pitcher Bruce Celico (Westerly, RI) in the bottom of
the first inning. The Anchormen jumped right back into the contest
with two runs in the top of the second as junior second baseman
Garrett Grenier (North Smithfield, RI) contributed a sacrifice
fly. |

SSC
tacked on another three runs in the bottom half of the frame,
chasing Celico from the game after a mere two innings of work, and
two more in the third to put the game away. |
|
|
|
Viking senior catcher and leadoff hitter Marc Crovo (Melrose, MA)
set the tone, going 3-for-5 and scoring three times. SSC freshman
shortstop Ryan Kane (Nahant, MA) produced a run scoring
single and finished with three RBIs. Senior first baseman Ken
Luongo (Wilmington, MA) went 2-for-4, including a double, two
runs scored and two RBIs, while senior third baseman Mike Addesa
(Revere, MA) added a two-run single. |

Rhode Island College senior Pete Olson (North Providence, RI)
continued his torrid hitting pace by going 3-for-5. Junior center
fielder B.J. Doyon (Douglas, MA) went 2-for-3 with one run
scored and a triple. Senior Evan Grogan (East Lyme, CT)
hurled an inning of scoreless relief. |

Salem State junior right-hander Bobby Fournier (Cambridge, MA)
registered his first victory of the season, going 6.1 innings,
allowing just four hits and giving up just one run. He walked one
and struck out one. Celico (2-2) took the loss for the Anchormen. |

|
|
In
upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Little East
Conference play with a doubleheader at home against Plymouth State
on Saturday, Mar. 29. |
