ANCHORWOMEN TAKE TWO AT UMASS
DARTMOUTH
|
|
North Dartmouth, MA—Rhode
Island College held the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s
softball team to a single run and swept their Little East Conference
doubleheader, 8-0 and 5-1, at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex
on Tuesday. |

In the
nightcap, the Anchorwomen took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on
a bases-loaded walk to right fielder Chelsi Panarelli
(Shrewsbury, MA) and a two-run single by freshman center fielder
Donielle Mattoon (Coventry, RI). Senior first baseman
Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) drove in RIC’s other two runs
with a sixth-inning single. Freshman right-hander Ashley Puls
(West Springfield, MA) took the loss for UMass Dartmouth and
fell to 1-7, while sophomore Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY)
pitched the first five innings for the Anchorwomen and earned the
win, improving to 10-2. |

Freshman
right-hander Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) pitched a four-hit
shutout for RIC in the opener. RBI singles by freshman catcher
Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT) and Panarelli helped stake Rhode
Island College to a 3-0 lead. The Anchorwomen scored five runs in
the top of the sixth, and the game ended after six innings because
of the eight-run rule. Neece was the winner and improved to 13-1,
while junior right-hander Amie Nickerson (Wrentham, MA) took
the loss and dropped to 4-8. |

UMass
Dartmouth fell to 5-15 and 1-4 in the Little East Conference with
the defeats, while RIC improved to 24-4 and 8-0 in LEC play. The
Corsairs will return to action Thursday when they host Curry in a
non-conference doubleheader, while the Anchorwomen will host
Westfield State in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday. |
