ANCHORWOMEN SWEEP COLONIALS
Underclassmen Help Lead RIC to Victory on Senior Day
|
|
Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College took two games from Western Connecticut in a battle
of two Little East Conference softball heavyweights on Tuesday
afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex. The Anchorwomen
raise their overall record to 29-5 and remain unbeaten in the LEC
with a 12-0 mark. WestConn falls to 23-11 overall and 8-4 in league
action. |

In the first
contest, RIC freshman catcher Kayla Jandreau (Plainville, CT)
blasted a one-out, two-run home run (2) off WestConn senior reliever
Shelby Slie (Seymour, CT) in the bottom of the seventh inning
to give the Anchorwomen a 4-2 walk-off win. The Colonials built a
2-0 advantage with a solo home run (4) by freshman designated player
Meghan Mammone (Stamford, CT) in the third inning and a bases
loaded RBI walk from senior third baseman Stacey DiMaggio
(Hopewell Jct. NY) in the fourth. |

Rhode Island
College tied the game in the fifth frame as sophomore shortstop
Kelsey Souza (Braintree, MA) scored on an error and senior third
baseman Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, MA) plated classmate first
baseman Christie Lotti (Waterford, CT) with a crafty bases
loaded, RBI-bunt single that was just over the reach of WestConn
senior first baseman Megan Brunnell (North Attleboro, MA). |

Freshman
pitcher Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA) earned the win (15-2),
allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out five. Western
Connecticut senior pitcher Cortney Romyns (Newton, NJ) took
the loss (4-1), allowing three runs on one hit, while striking out
two. |

RIC rode the momentum into the
nightcap to end the contest in just five innings with an 8-0
decision. Lotti blasted a 1-1 pitch over the right field fence off
DiMaggio to lead off the home half of the first. The Anchorwomen put
the game out of reach the following inning. After one run had
already scored on a throwing error, the Colonials intentionally
walked Lotti to load the bases. Freshman second baseman Amanda
Perry (New Bedford, MA) followed with a grand slam homer (3)
over the left field fence to make the score 6-0. Bilek rounded out
the offensive outburst to make the score 8-0 with a two-out,
opposite field, two-run double in the fourth inning. |

two hits in 1.2 inning of work. |

The Class of
2008 and their families |

The Anchorwomen honored their
three seniors prior to the start of the game as Bilek, Lotti and
senior catcher Jeanne Rosa (Milford, CT), along with their
families, were recognized prior to the start of the doubleheader. |

In upcoming action, Rhode Island
College will close out the regular season at Little East Conference
rival Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Apr. 26. The Anchorwomen can
wrap up their fourth consecutive LEC Regular Season Championship,
along with the right to host the conference tournament, by winning
one of the two games with the Warriors. RIC will also be looking to
establish a new school record for the most conference wins in a
season. The previous mark of 12-2 was set by the 2005 and 2007
editions. |
