Coughlin’s Career-High 19 Points Can’t Stop Owls |

Island College saw its four-game win streak come to an end in a
65-51 loss to Little East Conference rival Keene State at Spaulding
Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon. The Anchorwomen see their record
dip to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the LEC. The Owls snap a four-game
losing streak of their own and up their record to 3-4 overall and
1-1 in league play. |

Rhode Island College senior guard Sarah Coughlin (North
Attleboro, MA) scored a career-high 19 points, grabbed nine
rebounds, which tied her career-mark, and dished out two assists in
a losing effort. Coughlin was a perfect 10-for-10 from the free
throw line. |

Sophomore forward Jenn Knott (Narragansett, RI) scored 10
points and snared five caroms, while senior forward Sherri Heard
(Coventry, RI) totaled nine points and seven boards. |

Keene State sophomore forward Nicole Simmler (Oxford, MA)
finished with a double-double, totaling a career-high 16 points and
13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kristin Degou (Newburyport, MA)
logged 14 points, while senior guard Danielle Graveley
(Schenectady, NY) added 13 points. |

Keene State's shooting woes continued in the first half as it fell
behind 20-11 at the break. The Owls, who went nine minutes without
scoring a point, shot 4-for-25 from the field (16 percent) and
1-for-10 in three-pointers (10 percent) in the first stanza. |
|
|
|
The Owls turned up the defensive pressure and began to knock down
their three-point shots in the second half. After KSC tied the score
at 25-all on a pair of free throws, by Simmler, the Owls went on a
17-4 run to go up, 42-29 at the 10:58 mark. Gravely ignited the run
with three treys, while Simmler contributed five points. |

A lay-up by junior forward Jenn Kinney (Salem, NH) and
another three-pointer by sophomore guard Alyssa Sapp (Hartford,
VT) gave KSC a 49-34 lead with 6:52 to play as the Owls cruised
to the win. |

|
In the second half, KSC shot 50 percent from the field (15-for-30),
67 percent from behind the arc (8-for-12) and 16-for-19 ((84
percent) from the free throw line on the way to scoring 54 points.
RIC shot 29 percent (14-for-49) from the field and 17 percent
(2-for-12) from downtown in the game. Free throw shooting kept the
Anchorwomen in the contest, shooting 88 percent (21-for-24). |

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Wesleyan on
Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. RIC is undefeated at home this winter,
posting a perfect 4-0 mark. The Owls are off for finals and the
holidays. |
