ANCHORWOMEN OPEN ’08 WITH WIN OVER HAWKS
FOUR SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES LED BY MCNAMEE’S 20 POINTS |

Bristol, RI—
Rhode Island College opened the New Year with a 68-62 win over Roger
Williams in non-conference action on Tuesday evening. Four
Anchorwomen reached double digits in scoring, led by junior guard
Michelle McNamee’s (Cranston, RI) game-high 20 points. |

The game
opened in the Hawks’ favor with a three pointer by Jackie Criss
(Westwood, MA), followed by a steal and layup by Jennifer
Youngquist (Sandwich, MA) on the ensuing inbound, giving RWU an
early 5-0 lead. The Hawks extended the lead to 14-2 and maintained
control early, before the Anchorwomen responded with a 16-5 run to
pull within one. RIC would not come closer in the half, trailing by
four, 32-28, going into the second frame. |

The first
10 minutes of the second half saw both teams fighting back and forth
at a frantic pace, highlighted by six ties and seven lead changes.
When the dust settled, RIC sophomore forward Jennifer Knott
(Narragansett, RI) knocked down a free throw to break a 48-48
tie. That free throw sparked a 7-0 run to put the Anchorwomen up,
55-48, with 5:58 to play. |

The Hawks
cut the deficit to four at the 2:15 mark, giving themselves an
opportunity to regain the lead. Both teams were held scoreless over
the next 1:40, keeping the score at 60-56. RIC maintained the lead
by sinking eight straight free throws over the final 35 seconds to
secure the victory. |

|
|
McNamee added six rebounds, two steals and a block to her 29-minute
effort off the bench. Senior forward Sherri Heard (Coventry, RI)
logged 14 points and tied with Knott for the team lead with eight
rebounds. Sophomore guard Alice Mullen (Saunderstown, RI)
scored 10 points, while also contributing five assists. Senior guard
Sarah Coughlin (North Attleboro, MA) tied a career-high with
10 assists. |

Youngquist
finished with a season-high 10 points, four rebounds and four
assists for the Hawks, while Heather Babin (Danvers, MA)
posted a team high 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and
three blocks. Caitlin McNabb (Springfield, MA) contributed 10
points off the bench. |

|
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will travel to Little East
Conference rival Plymouth State on Saturday, Jan. 12. The Hawks will
face Salve Regina on Thursday, Jan. 10. |
