RIC WRESTLING TAKES FIFTH AT
BUDD WHITEHILL DUALS
|
|
|
|
|
|
Williamsport, PA—The
No. 17-ranked Rhode Island College wrestling team placed fifth at
the Budd Whitehill Duals, hosted by Lycoming, on Jan. 11-12. Head
Coach Jay Jones’s Anchormen defeated R.I.T., 24-13, before
falling to Loras, 20-19, in a thriller on Jan. 11. |

|
RIC
rebounded to sweep its remaining three matches on Jan. 12, downing
No. 10 Ithaca, 21-20, No. 9 The College of New Jersey, 25-13 and No.
14 York College of Pennsylvania, 22-15. |
|
|
|
Senior Mike Bonora (Nutley, NJ) continued to dominate at 141
lbs., going a perfect 5-0 at the duals. He is currently 24-2 with
103 takedowns, eight reversals, 21 near-falls and six pins on the
season. His only two losses have been to Div. I wrestlers. Bonora
has earned first place finishes at the Roger Williams Invitational
on No. 10, the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 17 and the R.I.T.
Invitational on Dec. 1. He is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation
at 141 lbs. |

Freshman
Brendan Guarino (Lodi, NJ) also registered a solid weekend,
going 4-1 at 165 lbs. to up his record to 11-10 on the season. For
his efforts, he was named the Pilgrim Wrestling League’s Rookie of
the Week. |

Sophomore
Mike Martini (Cranston, RI) went 4-1 at 157 lbs. to raise his
record to 21-5 overall to go along with 35 takedowns, 12 reversals,
six near-falls and six pins. Junior Nick Logan (Lowell, MA)
went 4-1 at 184 lbs., raising his record to 20-5 to go along with 46
takedowns, three reversals, 11 near-falls and 10 pins. |

In upcoming
action, RIC will host New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) rival
WPI at The Murray Center on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. |
|
|
|
RIC is
currently ranked No. 1 in the NEWA among Div. III institutions and
No. 5 among Div. I, II and III schools. |
