Coughlin Breaks 22-Year Old Record in Loss
RIC Suffers Third Straight Little East Defeat |

Providence, RI—Rhode
Island College senior guard Sarah Coughlin (North Attleboro, MA)
broke Jo-Ann D’Alessandro’s ’88 22-year old record for
assists in a season, but the Anchorwomen fell, 59-45, to Little East
Conference rival Western Connecticut Tuesday night at The Murray
Center. Coughlin now has 141 assists on the season, breaking the
previous mark of 137 established in 1985-86. |

RIC loses its third-straight Little East Conference
game, falling to 12-11 overall and 5-8 in league play. Western
Connecticut has won eight of its last nine games and improves to
18-5 overall and 11-2 in league action. |

|
|
The Anchorwomen fell behind, 5-0, in the early going,
but went on a 17-9 run to take a 17-14 lead on a senior forward
Sherri Heard’s (Coventry, RI) jump shot with 6:20 left in the
first half. The Colonials responded with an 18-9 run to close out
the first stanza and head into the locker room with a 32-26 lead. |

WestConn opened the second half on a 14-2 run over
the first 4:40 to build a 41-28 lead. The Anchorwomen would cut the
Colonials’ advantage down to five points, 44-39, with 9:13 left in
the game, but would not get closer. |

|
Western Connecticut senior guard Ally Greenwood
(East Hartford, CT) was a force on both ends of the floor,
contributing 11 points, five rebounds, eight steals, five assists
and a block. Freshman guard Karli Spera (Waterford, CT)
chipped in with 12 points, while junior forward Stacey Roberts
(Windham, CT) scored all 10 of her points in the second half en
route to a double-double with a game-high 10 rebounds. |

Heard paced the Anchorwomen attack with a game-high
14 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore forward Jenn Knott
(Narragansett, RI) added 11 points. |
|
|
|
Tonight’s game marked the final regular season home
game for both Coughlin and Heard, who were honored, along with their
families, prior to the start of the game. |
|
|
|
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will close
out the regular season at Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, Feb. 23
at 1 p.m. |
