Rhode Island College Women’s Indoor Track & Field 2002-03 Season Summary

Providence, RI—Head Coach Kevin Jackson’s team closed out the 2002-03 season at the ECAC Div. III Championships, hosted by Tufts University on Mar. 7-8. RIC did not score as a team.

The Anchorwomen competed at the New England Div. III Championships, hosted by Bowdoin on Feb 21-22. RIC finished 22nd (22 teams) with a team score of 3.

RIC competed at the Little East Conference/MASCAC Alliance Championships, hosted by Southern Maine, on Feb. 15. RIC placed fifth overall and third in the Little East with a score of 47.

Senior Marvel Heidy Mejia (West Palm Beach, FL) placed 34th in the 200 meters with a time of 35.95 at the Alliance Championships.

Mejia is an art education major and a 1999 graduate of Central High School in Providence.

Junior Michele Dunphy (Cranston, RI) placed ninth in the 600 meters with a time of 1:51.78 at the Alliance Championships. Dunphy placed 12th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:08.47 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed 73rd in the 800 meters with a time of 2:44.69 at the Terrier Classic. Dunphy placed 34th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:39.37 at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational.

Junior Joanne Pora (Attleboro, MA) placed eighth in the shot with a distance of 29’06.50” at the Alliance Championships. She placed 13th in the weight throw with a distance of 31’02.00”at the same meet. Pora placed eighth in the shot with a distance of 27’01.00” and fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 34’07.50” at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed 31st in the weight throw with a distance of 35’09.25” at the Terrier Classic. Pora placed eighth in the weight throw with a distance of 35’01.75” at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. She placed 26th in the weight throw with a distance of 26’11.00” at the Yale Invitational. Pora placed ninth in the weight throw with a distance of 9.77 meters and fifth in the shot with a distance of 8.48 meters at the Harvard Invitational. She placed 16th in the weight throw with a distance of 38’02.00” and 15th in the shot with a distance of 27’06.50” at the Brown Invitational.

Sophomore Courtney Gardiner (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the triple jump and long jump events, placing sixth with a leap of 31’00.00” and seventh with a leap of 14’10.75” respectively. Gardiner placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 14’08.75” and sixth in the triple jump with a leap of 30’09.00” at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Sophomore Rebecca Horton (Seekonk, MA) placed ninth in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:27.32 at the Alliance Championships, establishing a new RIC record in the process. Horton placed 11th  in the mile with a time of 6:02.90 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed 35th in the mile with a time of 6:03.99 at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. Horton placed tenth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 12:58.28 at the Harvard Invitational. She placed 12th in the mile with a time of 6:05.14 at the Brown Invitational.

Sophomore Jessica Leonard (Warwick, RI) placed 19th in the shot with a distance of 41’03.75.” at the New England Championships. Leonard earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the weight throw, placing sixth with a distance of 39’06.50”. She placed ninth in the shot with a distance of 28’09.00”at the Alliance Championships.

Leonard placed tenth in the shot with a distance of 25’11.50” and seventh in the weight throw with a distance of 37’06.00” at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed 25th in the weight throw with a distance of 38’02.00” at the Terrier Classic. Leonard placed fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 41’11.25” at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. She placed 15th in the weight throw with a distance of 39’01.25” at the Yale Invitational. Leonard placed seventh in the shot with a distance of 7.99 meters and sixth in the weight throw with a distance of 12.54 meters at the Harvard Invitational. She placed 15th in the weight throw with a distance of 39’07.75” at the Brown Invitational.

Sophomore Kate McCalligett (Warwick, RI) placed 21st in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.69 at the ECAC Championships. She earned All-New England honors in the 400 meters, placing eighth with a time of 1:01.02 at the New England Championships. McCalligett placed 13th in the 200 meters with a time of 27.18 at the same meet. McCalligett earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in both the 400 and 200 meters. She placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 61:32 and fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.18.

McCalligett placed third in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7:86 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 27.27 and second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.02 at the same meet. McCalligett placed 36th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.11  at the Terrier Classic. She placed fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.41 at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. McCalligett placed 21st in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.91 and fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.46 at the Yale Invitational. She placed 14th in the 200 meters with a time of 27.66 and 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.35 at the Harvard Invitational. McCalligett placed 11th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:04.12 at the Brown Invitational.

Freshman Temitayo Adenodi (Woonsocket, RI) placed 15th in the 200 meters with a time of 29.80 at the Alliance Championships. She placed ninth in the 55 meters with a time of 8.24 at the same meet. Adenodi placed eighth in the 55 meters with a time of 8.25 and 16th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.64 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed 13th in the 60 meters with a time of 9.10 and 20th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.07 at the Harvard Invitational. Adenodi placed 18th in the 55 meters with a time of 8.36 and 18th in the 200 meters with a time of 30.63 at the Brown Invitational.

Freshman Kim Cadden (Warwick, RI) earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 1,000 meters, placing fifth with a time of 3:17.78. Cadden placed fourth in the mile with a time of 5:30.24 and tenth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:33.07 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She finished 61st in the mile with a time of 5:37.09 at the Terrier Classic. The time was a new school record for Cadden, who also held the previous high mark. She placed 24th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:33.21 at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. Cadden placed fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:10.22 at the Harvard Invitational, establishing a new RIC record in the process. She placed ninth in the mile with a time of 5:41.68 at the Brown Invitational.

Freshman Allison DeRoy (Smithfield, RI) placed 19th in the shot with a distance of 20’10.00” at the Alliance Championships. She placed 17th in the weight throw with a distance of 23’08.75” at the same meet. DeRoy placed tenth in the shot with a distance of 19’10.25” at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed 12th in the weight throw with a distance of 21’11.75” at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. DeRoy placed tenth in the weight throw with a distance of 6.02 meters and ninth in the shot with a distance of 6.38 meters at the Harvard Invitational. She placed 21st in the weight throw with a distance of 19’08.25” and 19th in the shot with a distance of 19’08.00” at the Brown Invitational.

Freshman Monique Gonsalves (Rumford, RI) placed 12th in the preliminary round of the 55 meters with a time of 8.85 at the Alliance Championships. She placed 13th in the preliminary round of the 55 meters with a time of 8.75 at the Southern Maine Invitational.

Freshman Bridget Hjerpe (Cranston, RI) placed 11th in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:53.51 at the Alliance Championships. Hjerpe placed eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 12:03.50 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed ninth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 12:02.21 at the Brown Invitational.

Freshman Tiffany Kirch (Hope, RI) placed 23rd in the 200 meters with a time of 35.67 at the Alliance Championships. Kirch placed 21st the 200 meters with a time of 34.94 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed 53rd in the preliminary of the 200 meters with a time of 35.89 at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. Kirch placed 22nd in the 200 meters with a time of 35.68 at the Harvard Invitational. She placed 21st in the 200 meters with a time of 35.51 at the Brown Invitational.

Freshman Dana Schmidt (North Scituate, RI) placed 22nd in the 200 meters with a time of 33.28 at the Alliance Championships. Schmidt placed 20th in the 200 meters with a time of 33.53 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed 52nd in the preliminary of the 200 meters with a time of 34.87 at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. Schmidt placed 23rd in the 200 meters with a time of 36.90 at the Harvard Invitational. She placed 23rd in the 200 meters with a time of 36.66 at the Brown Invitational.

Freshman Dana Skorupa (Cumberland, RI) earned All-New England honors in the 55 meters, placing seventh with a time of 7.74. She placed ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.35 at the New England Championships. Skorupa earned All-Alliance/Little East honors in the 55 meters, placing second with a time of 7.73. She also placed ninth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.67 at the same meet. Skorupa placed 15th in the 200 meters with a time of 27.77 at the Harvard Invitational. She placed eighth in the 300 meters with a time of 45.44 at the Brown Invitational, establishing a new RIC record in the process.

Skorupa placed first in the 55 meters with a time of 7.70 and second in the 200 meters with a time of 27.22 at the Southern Maine Invitational. She placed third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.45 and fourth in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.43 at the same meet. Skorupa placed 50th in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.28 at the Terrier Classic. She placed 28th in the preliminary of the 200 meters with a time of 27.52 at the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational. Skorupa placed 13th in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.71 and seventh in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.89 at the Yale Invitational.
